I created this recipe for my nephew’s barbeque party. Everyone, even my mother, complimented me. She consistently complains that I over-season my food. I presented her.

I keep seeing a lot of people mentioning that this recipe has more of an icy or slush consistency or at least it has the texture of ice crystals when you eat it. Yes! This is the ENTIRE point of Southern Simple Ice Milk (SSIM). It is NOT supposed to be like traditional creamy textured ice cream. So…if you are looking for an ICE CREAM re ice, this is not for you. The beauty of this is the crystally-goodness and the simplicity of it. BUT, that being said, if you have never had something like what I just described and are still willing to try it, you will be pleasantly surprised and i am sure that you will be making it for years to come and others who try it will be requesting it from you every summer! Oh the nostalgia of my childhood!☺️

Love this SIMPLE, YUMMY recipe. Taste like what we grew up on. I made this recipe and a different custard style recipe for 4th July – this one was devoured! Lots of compliments. I added a little more vanilla though. Such a wonderful recipe! A+++

Excellent old fashioned recipe! To make a bit richer, my grandmother would add 1 pint half and half to the ingredients. Love the sweetness. For a great kids day, place 1 cup mixtures into a half pound coffee cans. Place the lidded can into a pound coffee can. Place ice and rock salt around the can and put the lid on. Tape it down so it doesn’t accidentally come off and let the kids shake and roll the cans for 30 minutes. Be sure and wash off the half pound can before opening. Children can eat their sweet treat right from the can!

Easy with minimal ingredients. Great simple flavor. More icy and not as creamy as other homemade ice-cream. (If you have the time/money to substitute some of the milk with cream and sweetened condensed milk, it would be creamier and have a better texture.)

This is The best thing I have ever eaten! Although my alien friends left because they where allergic, I still love it!!!

The ice cream was good but It recommended a lot more sugar than necessary. We masked the sweetness my adding backing chocolate shavings then it tasted much better. It was more of icy consistency, but overall, it was good.

I did not have 8 cups of milk so i cut it down to 2 cups milk, a half cup of sugar, and less than a teaspoon on vanilla extract. LOVED IT!Tasted exactly like vanilla ice cream! Thank you i am so inspired by this recapé.

How to make this ice cream without an ice cream machine

Everyone loved it. I did substitute! Instead of 8 cups of milk, I used 4 cups of half and Half and 4 cups of milk.

Made this in my maker and it does taste quite good we had to put it in the freezer to get it to harden properly before eating it.

It tastes delicious, but it definitely came out as more of a shaved ice kind of texture than an ice cream.

I used this recipe as a base. I halved the recipe for my electric machine, using a 15 oz. can of coconut milk and enough almond milk to make 4 cups. Then I added one REALLY ripe banana and 2 T crushed pineapple (I cut the sugar back to 3/4 cup)… FANTASTIC!

Thanks to Margie for this perfectly quick, easy and affordable recipe. Best of all, it’s imple enough that everyone can put their own twist on it. Great as-is, or add fruit, flavored extract, less sugar, more sugar, exchange a portion of the milk with 1/2 & 1/2….possibilities are endless. Consider this a great “starter” recipe for all summertime fun treats.

I didn’t have an ice cream maker, but who knew I wouldn’t need one! I was shocked at how easy ice cream is to make! I also made a strawberry flavor with strawberries and made a chocolate flavor with unsweetened cocoa powder.

it tasted great but try 1 cup instead of 2

This is fab. I did not have a ice cream maker either so I just put it in resealable containers and checked on it every 30 min and once it was soft serve I put cocoa chips is it. Yummmmmmm.??

Really good! I don’t have an ice cream maker so I just stir the mixture every 45 minutes and keep it in the freezer. Tastes great!

Turned our great. Added one package of sugar free instant pudding; reduced sugar to 2/3 cup. Chilled it over night, put it in the ice cream maker; added strawberry jam at the end of the process. It has less fat, less calories and sugar, no cooking. A little icy, but creamy and tasty. Very good alternative to frozen custard,

Although this had great flavor, it was not creamy at all. Very icy and almost impossible to make a pretty scoop with, it kinda just falls apart into ice flakes. 4 stars though because it does taste delicious 🙂

Our favorite go-to recipe. Turns out perfect every time. I’ve made it with coconut milk as well. Freezes great. We leave it sitting out for about five minutes and it softens up a bit.
