With only 4 simple ingredients—pure vanilla extract, milk, heavy whipping cream, and sugar—you can easily make this homemade ice cream. This American- or Philadelphia-style ice cream has a vanilla flavor that is brighter and more overt.

Ingredients
- 2 ¼ cups milk
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- ¾ cup white sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Instructions
- Stir milk, cream, and sugar in a saucepan over low heat until sugar has dissolved. Heat just until the mixture is hot and a small ring of foam appears around the edge.
- Transfer cream mixture to a pourable container such as a large measuring cup. Stir in vanilla extract and chill mix thoroughly, at least 2 hours. (Overnight is best.)
- Pour cold ice cream mix into an ice cream maker, turn on the machine, and churn according to manufacturer’s directions, 20 to 25 minutes.
- When ice cream is softly frozen, serve immediately or place a piece of plastic wrap directly on the ice cream and place in the freezer to ripen, 2 to 3 hours.

Reviews
Your ice cream machine is broken and somehow its the authors fault that it deserves 1 star. I just love people who change recipes or use broken equipment and then give a poor review because it didn’t turn out. What a waste of time to even read these things.
Mine came out good. I used 1% milk and it still worked, but next time I will do whole milk because I think it would thicken nicer. It was a little too sweet for me, so next time I make it I will do 1/2 cup of sugar instead of 3/4.
I love this! I did exchange the whipping cream for 0% Greek yogurt and increased the sugar to 1 cup. It turned out absolutely delicious
It worked perfectly. And it did freeze nicely. A great texture and taste. I’ll be teaching the grandkids how to make ice cream this week using this recipe. Tom
Needs salt
My mom made it its soooo good
We all loved this vanilla recipe! Very easy and nice and vanillaee LOL THANK YOU
Definitely delicious!!
Made it as is turned out great!
I loved how easy it was to make. And my guests loved it so much.
Easy and delicious
Works really well. If it’s not working, like in some of these reviews, the problem is likely either that the ice cream machine’s base isn’t cold enough (leave that sucker in the freezer for at least 8 hours) or the milk (you want whole milk, not 2% or skim, or anything).
Great base recipe! I Have made it several times. You can add pretty much anything to it and it comes out great. I’ve added Creme de Menthe and mini chocolate chips, cocoa powder, and vanilla bean and they have all been wonderful! You can add any mixings you want!

Amazing the best ice cream I’ve ever had I’m totally making this again
Perfect balance of creaminess and flavour.
Super easy I would recommend it to anyone
I made it! I made one change since I am a diabetic. I swapped out the regular sugar for 1/4 cup of Truvia baking blend.
Followed instructions implicitly. Could not get it to thicken
No taste Great
Best recipe I have found for my ice cream maker. It’s a little soft when done, but sets up nicely after freezing about an hour.
