Second Baby Food: Carrots and Broccoli

  4.0 – 2 reviews

For growing infants that are 6 to 9 months old or older, this broccoli and carrot baby food dish works beautifully. You can vary the vegetables by using what is in season or what you have on hand. Sometimes I prefer to substitute green beans for broccoli. Make some on a free night, mark the zip-top bags with the date you made it, and freeze for up to two months!

Prep Time: 10 mins

Total Time: 2 hrs 35 mins
Servings: 12

Ingredients

  1. 2 cups chopped carrots
  2. 2 cups broccoli florets
  3. ½ cup breast milk
  4. ½ cup water

Instructions

  1. Place a steamer insert into a saucepan and fill with water to just below the bottom of the steamer. Bring water to a boil. Add carrots and broccoli, cover, and steam until tender, about 20 minutes.
  2. Transfer steamed carrots and broccoli to a blender or food processor. Add breast milk and water and blend until creamy. Strain mixture through a fine-mesh sieve to remove any lumps.
  3. Spread blended mixture into an ice cube tray, cover with plastic wrap, and freeze until solid, 2 to 3 hours.
  4. Transfer frozen cubes to a zip-top freezer bag and store in the freezer.
  5. You can substitute formula or water for the breast milk.
  6. Heat cubes in the microwave until warm but not hot, about 30 seconds. Stir thoroughly before serving.

A great recipe for baby and my little one seemed to like it. The carrots did take more than 20 minutes, more like 40. I steamed the carrots & broccoli separate. I thinned out the recipe using water. This recipe makes a lot so I am definitely freezing some for later. I am going to add some vanilla and cinnamon for added flavor to some of the freezer batches I prepare. Other spices can be used as well but please check with your Pediatrican.

I would give it 5 stars because the carrots give it a sweet flavor that most babies like. However, 20 minutes is about half the time it takes for carrots to soften. Where as broccoli does not take as long as carrots to soften. I would not steam these together again. Do carrots and then broccoli and then blend them together.
