Ingredients
- 6 russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
- ½ cup warm milk
- ¼ cup butter
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- 1 pinch ground black pepper
- 8 hot dogs
- 4 processed cheese singles (such as Kraft), cut in half
Instructions
- Place potatoes into a large pot and cover with salted water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until tender, about 20 minutes. Drain and allow to steam dry for a minute or two. Return to the pot and mash with milk, butter, salt, and pepper.
- While the potatoes are boiling, place hot dogs into a saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to low and keep warm until potatoes have been mashed.
- Preheat the oven’s broiler and set the oven rack about 6 inches from the heat source.
- Slice hot dogs down the center, leaving the two halves attached like a hot dog bun. Stuff hot dogs with mashed potato mixture and place into a baking dish. Place half a slice of cheese on top of each hot dog.
- Broil in the preheated oven until cheese is bubbly and has melted, about 1 minute.
- You can use any type of hot dogs or sausages you like.

We called them Stuffed Hot Dogs…just made em last night. I have been eating these since I was a small child and our family (6 of us) had to eat cheap as dad was the only one working to support mom and us 4 kids. I am now 75 and that should tell you just how long I have been making these. It’s probally one of the quickest and easiest recipes I make…..hot dogs, instant mashed potatoes and American cheese slices baked at 350 for 35 to 40 minutes at 350 degrees. Served with ketchup on em. I have 1 left in my fridge…micro for 2 minutes and ready to go…
My mom made this for me 50 years ago and I always thought of them as a treat. They are great 50 years later. I just bake them instead of broiling them, though.
My grandmother, mother and myself have been making these since 1950 when my grandmother found this recipe in the 1950 Betty Crocker cookbook offered as an exact replica still today. We are more generous with the potatoes and top with paprika
I used instant potatoes and shredded cheddar cheese, plus sliced green onions.
Omg My mom made these back in the 70s! We called them Glorified Hot Dogs. I use garlic mashed potatoes and real cheese. Easy peasy.
did use vegan hot dogs and vegan cheese
I threw it in the oven at 400 degrees long enough for the cheese to melt. It was delishes
It came out great. I added some sauted onions and used shredded cheese. The missing star reflects the fat content but it could be modified.
Instant mashed potatoes also work. I saute chopped onions and mixed them into the mashed potatoes. I also added prepared mustard (to taste) to the mashed potatoes. Then stuffed the boiled hot dogs and added cheese and then broiled them. Tasted great and easy to prepare in 1/2 the time.
I made this recipe for my boyfriend for a late night after work snack. he ate 5 of them and really enjoyed them . he drizzled ketchup and mustard on them. it was easy to broil hot dogs in the oven and make instant mashed potatoes. the cheese pulls it all together. definitely an appetizer meal to bring to parties.
What a simple yet excellent meal! I used Costco Polish Beef Hot Dogs and split them down the middle and cooked them at 375 while the potatoes were boiling. I used cheddar cheese instead of American In the taters. While stuffing the “boats” I cranked the heat up to broil, then popped them in for 5 minutes and served with corn!! Such a family hit!!!
Quick and easy, kids liked it!
these are really good I also make them with bologna or whatever lunch meat you like kids really love them
My mom used to make this for us all the time. She used instant mashed potatoes instead, and we make them with sausage instead of hot dogs. So good! 🙂
How can you not love hot dogs topped with potatoes and cheese? My mom used to add some minced onion to the potatoes but I prefer to add chives. The oniony flavor goes really well. I agree with a previous person that said you don’t have to pre-boil the hot dogs. Great busy weeknight meal, just add a green veg or salad!
This is surprisingly good!! Used leftover mashed potatoes.
Pretty good. Different way to cook hot dogs. An easy quick meal. Will make again but will try instant potatoes for a quick week night meal. Update – tried with instant and worked great. My 15 month old loved it!
My Hubby is hard to please. But he loved these! 🙂 I liked them, and my daughter loves anything with hotdogs. 🙂
I love hot dogs, and plan on trying this soon.. but it can’t become a vegetarian meal if it contains meat.
We have been making these forever! My mom mad ethem when we were growing up! You don’t need to preboil the hot dogs! Slice the dogs as stated or you can also use sausage dogs and put them under the broiler on a baking sheet – browning both sides. Then put the flat side down. We add a good squeeze of mustard before putting the potatoes on. I grate 1-2 cups of cheddar cheese into the mashed potatoes (opt.) when I am mashing them and then cover the dogs with a long scoop of the potatoes and place a slice of cheddar cheese on top and put them back under the broiler until the cheese melts. No need for boiling the dogs or transferring anything to the casserole dish. casserole dish!
These are SO good, someone made them and brought them to work and I had 3 of them! So simple, yet so tasty!
Nonetheless, its excessive melting temperature (1723 °C) and viscosity make it troublesome to work with.
