Mock Filets

The bacon wrapping on these’steaks’ gives them a lovely flavor, and this recipe makes a nice fake steak.

Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 20 mins
Total Time: 35 mins
Servings: 6
Yield: 6 mock filets

Ingredients

  1. 1 pound ground beef
  2. ¾ cup bread crumbs
  3. 2 eggs, beaten
  4. 2 tablespoons chopped onion
  5. 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  6. ⅛ teaspoon pepper
  7. 6 slices bacon
  8. ½ cup ketchup
  9. 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  10. ¼ teaspoon dry mustard

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven’s broiler.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix ground beef and bread crumbs. Add eggs, onion, salt and pepper; mix well. Shape into 6 thick patties. Wrap bacon around the outside rim of each patty, and secure with a toothpick or kitchen string.
  3. Place on rack in broiler pan or casserole dish and broil 5 inches from heat source for 10 minutes. Take out of oven and turn patties over.
  4. Mix ketchup, brown sugar and mustard in small bowl. Spoon over patties, and return to broil for 5 minutes longer or until meat is firm, and no longer pink in the center.

It was a hit I used beef filets but broil the same and loved the sauce over it

I fried the patties then served them with an onion and wine gravy. The family loved it all.

It was very good. I would definitely make it again.

These were good. Not like a filet but I’d definitely make them again.

My boyfriend is a huge fan of meatloaf (me, not so much) so I decided to give this recipe a try. It was incredible! The boyfriend agreed that this is the only way we will make it from now on – so easy and flavorful just as the recipe is written. Thanks for making me a fan of meatloaf again!

Yes, these are a weird ‘mock steak’ but amazing little meatloaves – the hubby and I loved every single bite. Used a lined jelly roll pan with a rack in it which worked great – so much bacon fat rendered down into it. Never got this to work in the broiler (the middle never cooked) but cooked this at 400 for 20 minutes on 1 side, then flipped it for another 10 minutes, adding the sauce after the flip. This did the trick for the size meatloaves we made. Doubled the recipe and got 10 little loaves, and followed the recipe (used 93/7 beef and glad I did). Only had 1 cup of (Italian seasoned) breadcrumbs left which was perfect (tried the full amount later and found it too much). After adding in the egg, the mix almost got too mushy/liquidy, but the patties stuck together fine and were moist. Really easy, really delicious – and a perfect ‘cabinet meal’ for us. Thank you to the reviewers that say this freezes great – I can’t wait to try that for a quick freezer meal. Needed all of the sauce recipe.

Easy 5 stars! One of our favorite meals. I didn’t have to change anything with the recipe and they were easy to do!

Family approved! (DH, 10 & 3 yo) Made with ground turkey and turkey bacon. Used everything except shorted the breadcrumbs by 1/4c. Every recipe for ground beef/turkey seemed to be meatloaf, meatballs, burgers or chili, so this was a nice variation. ….however, and I am not sure if it was because it was turkey, but it really just tasted like great meatloaf. (But so much quicker to make!) The sauce for the top was fabulous, wish I had made a little extra for dipping. So be sure to get it all on the top, it is delicious and makes the meal! Very happy and already requested again!

Did on BBQ. Family loved it. Basically a 5 star recipe. All of the ingredients inside the “steak”. Used one egg , lots of bread crumbs, worshtishire, 1.5 pound made enough for 7 of us. Very filling.

This was good, although more like meatloaf than steak. We grilled them and I added a little Worcestershire and garlic salt to the meat mixture.

These weren’t bad, but they weren’t anything amazing either. Certainly not “filet-like”, just a pretty decent bacon-wrapped burger.

This was so good, so moist and delish! The bacon wrapped around it really makes it, only thing I didn’t do was not make the ketchup sauce and I’m glad I didn’t. You have all got to try this dish!

The flavor was good with a texture very similar to meatloaf. Overall, I found it to be too dry, and I suspect the 3/4 cup of breadcrumbs was the culprit. Perhaps reducing it to 1/2 cup may solve the dilemma… My husband and son approved of it, therefore, it will remain in the “once in a while” file. Overall, this is a solid 3 star recipe as written. Thank you for the submission POFELY.

We really enjoyed this. The only changes I made was to the sauce, I put honey and Worcestershire in the sauce. and it turned out really perfect.

I have tried quite a few recipes on this site. I read reviews & try anything 4+Stars. This was disappointing. My family asked if they were hamburger or meatloaf. Flavor was off. This was not a hit just a Big miss.

Was really tasty but I would put extra sauce on it so it wouldnt be so dry in some areas. It would get a 5* if it had more sauce 🙂
Mallory Carpenter
Wasn’t a fan. You are better off either making meatloaf or just buying real fillets.
Candace Villegas
It tasted like a dry meat loaf, it wasnt bad, but I do think the sauce helps , I did not want to waste bacon on this since I do not like bacon wrapped around a good filet. I just sliced it cold the next day and made a meatloaf sandwich, now that was good! I might make again since my sig other like it.

I have been making these for years! This is a great adaptable recipe. I’ve made this as a meat loaf and also meatballs, with praise from those eating it. The sauce is a must though, it really makes the recipe.
