Sloppy Joes are a tasty and filling option for a quick meal before dropping the kids off at practice or a rehearsal. These delicious sandwiches will appeal to the child in all of us since they are moist, filling, and meaty.

Ingredients

  1. 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  2. 1 small onion, chopped
  3. ⅓ cup chopped green pepper
  4. 1 pound lean ground beef
  5. 1 ½ cups Heinz Tomato Ketchup
  6. 1 tablespoon Heinz Worcestershire Sauce
  7. 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  8. ¼ teaspoon salt
  9. ¼ teaspoon pepper
  10. 8 sandwich buns

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a large frying pan set over medium-high heat. Saute onions and green pepper for 5 minutes.
  2. Add beef to the pan. Cook, stirring until browned, about 5 to 10 minutes. Drain off fat.
  3. Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, salt and pepper. Simmer over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes or until slightly thickened. Serve on sandwich buns.
  4. Twist 1: For burger-appeal, jazz-up Sloppy Joes with additional toppings such as shredded lettuce, chopped tomato, grated cheese, sour cream or ranch dressing.
  5. Twist 2: For a meat variation, use lean ground chicken or pork instead of beef.
  6. Twist 3: For a Veggie boosted Joe, stir in 1 cup each shredded carrot and chopped mushrooms.
  7. Twist 4: For a high fibre alternative, try whole-wheat pitas or rolls instead of sandwich buns.
  8. Twist 5: For a chunkier Joe, use Heinz Chili Sauce, Chunky with Sweet Peppers instead of ketchup.
  9. Twist 6: For a smokey-flavoured Joe, use one of the Heinz BBQ Sauces instead of ketchup.

This recipe has TOO much ketchup! Now I see why. It had been submitted from Heinz. We were looking for a better sandwich. This recipe ended up morphing into a chili.

too sweet

Great recipe and very simple. I substitute sweet pickle relish for the brown sugar. Just the way I like it!

A little to much ketchup, but was still decent.

Nothing “classic” about this recipe! WAY too ketchup-y! I thought with the other ingredients it wouldn’t taste so much like ketchup, but, alas, such was not the case. Won’t be making this again!

This was a lot better than most SJ recipes, which usually include some form of mustard to impart a weird tang. I did not have to reduce the sugar like I usually do with any other sloppy joe recipe. I added a couple drops of liquid smoke. My family disappeared the batch pretty quickly.

Very simple to follow being my first time making sloppy joes

Only added a tad of mustard. I omitted green peppers only because I didn’t have any–sounds like they would be good in this recipe.

I used a medium/large white onion, a whole green and red pepper, no Worcestershire sauce and I added ketchup and mustard as I saw fit (maybe 2 Tbsp mustard and a little bit more ketchup than the recipe calls, I like my sloppy joes extra sloppy) then I added 1/2 cup water so that I could let it simmer longer. Also, I didn’t have brown sugar on hand so I added a bit of lime juice instead for sweetness. A large variation I know, but it turned out amazing!

Didn’t change anything. Husband loves it.

Pretty delish my son loved it

Really good. Tastes better than the seasoning mixes. Added a little bit of crushed red pepper to spice it up as well.
Abigail Hernandez
Made this recipe. Similar to what I made but without the green pepper. We love it. I will try to post a picture before we eat it all.

Not only did I love it but my husband did as well.

I used ground turkey and chili sauce. It was really good and quick!

I added chopped garlic and a tablespoon of mustard for tanginess. It was really good. I don’t make Sloppy Joes often as my husband doesn’t like them. When I have enough ground beef, I make him a hamburger and the rest of the family enjoys this.

Very sweet, not what I was hoping for. I guess I was looking for my mom’s sloppy joe’s

My husband and I both enjoyed these, simple to make and delicious. We topped them off with shredded cheddar for an easy week night meal.
