Ingredients
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon Spice Islands® Pumpkin Pie Spice
- 1 tablespoon Argo® Corn Starch
- 5 McIntosh or Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored (or more if desired)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon rum OR imitation rum flavoring
- 1 (9 inch) unbaked deep dish pie crust
- 2 tablespoons butter OR margarine
- 3 tablespoons prepared caramel sauce
- ½ cup flour
- ⅓ cup brown sugar
- ¼ cup butter OR margarine
Instructions
- Mix sugar, pumpkin pie spice and corn starch in a large bowl. Cut apples into 1/4-inch thick slices and place in a separate bowl. Sprinkle apples with lemon juice and rum; add to dry ingredients. Stir to combine. Place in piecrust. Dot with 2 tablespoons of butter. Drizzle with caramel sauce.
- Stir flour and brown sugar together in small bowl. Cut in 1/4 cup butter until mixture resembles coarse meal. Sprinkle evenly over top of pie.
- Bake in a preheated 400 degrees F oven for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees F and bake an additional 40 to 50 minutes, until golden brown. Delicious when served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Very delicious pie, I especially liked the addition of caramel (I used Smucker’s Salted Carmel Topping).
Mmm! The only things I did different was to used Captain Morgan Spiced Rum and fresh squeezed lemon for the juice part, and finally I melted the butter to brush on top with a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar then.

I made this pie exact to the recipe.It was delicious but way too much juice.I poured it off after completely cooled and served it as extra sauce.
This is my go to recipe. This apple pie is always a crowd favorite. I do use 4 tbsp of cornstarch as mentioned by the other reviewers. Other than the cornstarch, that is the only change I make. It is a well balanced recipe with all the homey feelings!

Followed the advice of some of the comments and tripled the cornstarch… It turned out perfectly. I love this pie, my mom took it to an office potluck and barely got a taste, and I had to make another just so I got a chance to try it. I used homemade caramel and it turned out really well.
This recipe is very good. We used 3 Tbsp of corn starch and it was still slightly runny. Next time we will use 4 Tbsp. We also used extra caramel sauce when serving.
This pie became an instant classic at out house the first time I made it, and now I make it every year at Thanksgiving.

A very good pie, I liked it. However, I used a store-bought crust (Wegmans), and this did not work out so well. In my opinion, the crust was too soft and not flaky enough, maybe a bit too thin. I am sure if I had made the crust myself from scratch, I could have given the pie five stars. I used more caramel sauce (about twice as much as the recipe calls for), as others suggested, and it came out very sweet. I used Macintosh apples (7 smaller ones), and piled the filling in a big heap, knowing it would cook down and result in a nice pie. I put a lattice crust on top, allowing some of the liquid from the apples to evaporate. My suggestion is if you like your pie really sweet, make it as the recipe says. If you like it less sweet, reduce the sugar, or even leave out the 1/2 cup and double the caramel sauce. I also used 3 Tbsp corn starch, and the pie was a bit runny as long as it was hot, so I drained about 2 Tbsp of liquid, and when it had cooled down, it was just the right amount. Don’t drain all the liquid, as this will result in a dry filling. I am sure I’ll make the pie again, but use a different crust.

Great caramel apple flavor but it could have came out a little less runny!
This recipe is amazing!! I made this as my first homemade pie. And i made it for thanksgiving!! Instead of using the prepared caramel sauce from the recipe, I used caramel apple dip from the deli. Absolutely fantastic. It was such a hit that Im making two more today. Also I did an eggwash over the top which made it really look great and gave it a delicious top crust
