Ingredients

  1. 3 large potatoes, cubed
  2. ¼ cup butter, divided
  3. 1 pound Polish kielbasa sausage, cut into 1/2-inch slices
  4. 2 onions, chopped
  5. 1 large head cabbage, coarsely chopped
  6. 2 (15 ounce) cans diced tomatoes
  7. ¼ cup white sugar
  8. 1 tablespoon paprika

Instructions

  1. Place potatoes in a microwave-safe bowl; cook in microwave until partially tender, about 8 minutes.
  2. Heat 2 tablespoons butter in a Dutch oven or large cast iron skillet over medium heat; cook and stir sausage and onions until browned, about 5 minutes. Transfer sausage and onions to a bowl.
  3. Heat remaining 2 tablespoons butter in the same Dutch oven; cook and stir cabbage until tender, about 5 minutes.
  4. Combine tomatoes, sugar, and paprika in a bowl; pour over cabbage and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and add potatoes and sausage-onion mixture. Cover Dutch oven and simmer until potatoes are tender, about 40 minutes.

Great recipe. I added 2 things – half teaspoon of red pepper flakes and a quarter teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Kielbasa was from local butcher and I used roasted diced tomatoes… Excellent!

Did not care for the polish sausage in this recipe. We liked everything else; but will try smoked sausage next time. If you like cooked cabbage, you will like this. This is an easy recipe with a lot of flavor. I prepared it as written including the sugar. It added the right amount of sweetness to the tomatoes. Will definitely make this again.

I overlooked the “for a crowd” part of the recipe; my DH asked who was joining us! I liked this recipe because it provided many textures for one at the table who has lost their sense of taste and smell. After reading some of the reviews, I adjusted the sugar and the paprika as suggested. I sliced some carrots to add to the dish and cooked the potatoes separately—oven fried style. I’ll make this dish again and probably won’t make it smaller either!

Loved. Left out sugar all together, per other reviews. Only had 1 can of diced tomatoes on hand, but was enough. Added about 1 Tbs of minced garlic when cooking the onions. Delicious

We loved this recipe. However, after all the work of chopping, peeling, and slicing of the ingredients, I just put it all in the slow cooker, to cook for about 4-5 hours. That’s the only change that I made. (we liked the addition of the sugar). Maybe use about 1/2 of what it called for.

Have to admit that I didnt follow exactly. I used 6 small potatoes instead of 3 large ones and I only had 1 large onion and 1 can of stewed tomatoes. Honestly I forgot the sugar and paprika but I am glad I did. I added a tbsp of chicken base to punch it up. Hubby wants me to add this to our list of recipes to make again.

The recipe was good and I liked the precooking of the potatoes but I am vegan so it definitely needed some tweeking for me. I used vegan sausage and vegan butter. I always use fennel with my cabbage so I added a teaspoon of that and a teaspoon of cumin, half the paprika and salt along with freshly ground red and black peppercorns. I also left out the sugar and used slightly less butter. My husband and I both loved it.

Excellent tasty dish. Tasted like what my late Mom made when I was growing up. Will be making this again in the future. The only thing I changed was I used can of stewed tomatoes in salsa.

I made this for a friends funeral and it smelled so good when I made it. I saved some back and it was delish! My only issue was my potatoes did not get very soft. I used Idaho potatoes and I think that was my problem. Other than that I will make this again.

Made as-is except added about 1/4 cup of water (possibly unnecessarily) during simmering. Seems like more than 4 servings! Did not find it “too sweet” but will likely cut the sugar back a little next time on general principles. It’s NOT a SKILLET, though. Use a Dutch oven or large (6 qt) pot.

Tried this recipe because it was a different approach with the addition of tomatoes. Rather than microwaving the potatoes, I sautéed them in the skillet until lightly browned for additional flavor, but the dish still turned out way too tomatoey and sweet which overpowered the flavors of the potatoes and smoked sausage. Will not be making this again.

Very tasty! I followed the recipe as posted, but used just a couple tablespoons of sugar, per the suggestions of other reviews. I also used 1.5 lbs kielbasa, also per other reviews. Very easy to make, too.

Used 2 cans tomato sauce over the diced tomatos. Just did 2 tablespoons sugar and 1/2 tablespoon (eyeballed it) of cumin. Cut the potatoes in slices and microwaved in water (took around 12 min in microwave for me but I like my potatoes soft) then cooked with the cabbage and sauce before adding sausage and onion.

Made this DELICIOUS comfort food tonight. Followed the recipe except I had polish sausage. My Polish girlfriend taught me to poke holes in the sausage and place in skillet with 1/2 inch of water a boil out the grease for 2-3 minutes. Wiped out the Dutch oven and preceded as directed! Did add much needed pepper. Definitely will make this again!

I love keilbasa and I make this dish often. We just got a new casserole Crockpot and this is just the recipe I want to use. We also love the Southside Beef sausages which would be great in this recipe too. In fact, a nice New Orleans dish with Andouille sausage is another great possibility with this versatile recipe.
