This recipe comes from my Bohemian (Czech) grandmother. The pronunciation is “Liss-tay”.

Prep Time: 20 mins
Cook Time: 30 mins
Additional Time: 10 mins
Total Time: 1 hr
Servings: 24
Yield: 2 dozen (approx.)

Ingredients

  1. 3 egg yolks
  2. 1 cup egg white
  3. ¼ teaspoon salt
  4. 2 tablespoons white sugar
  5. 2 teaspoons light whipping cream
  6. 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  7. 2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar
  8. 1 cup vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Mix together egg yolks, egg white, salt, sugar and cream. Gradually stir in flour until dough becomes stiff enough to roll out.
  2. Roll out paper thin and cut into triangles. (Grandma would cut a slit in the middle of each and twist a corner through the slit to make them look fancier.)
  3. Put enough oil in a pot to cover cookie. Heat oil until a small amount of dough placed in oil begins to fry. Deep fry each cookie in hot oil until light brown. Remove cookie from oil and drain excess oil on paper towels. Sprinkle with confectioner’s sugar.
  4. We have determined the nutritional value of oil for frying based on a retention value of 10% after cooking. The exact amount may vary depending on cook time and temperature, ingredient density, and the specific type of oil used.

Thanks for the recipe! I never did get my Babi’s recipe. When I thought of asking her how to make this, strudel, etc., she got sick. My memories of helping sprinkle the powdered sugar with her at Christmas will live on. Much appreciated!
