These straightforward but tasty butter buns are perfect if you enjoy butter. A sweet milk sauce is used to bake them. The ideal solution for a chilly morning.

Servings: 14
Yield: 1 bowl

Ingredients

  1. 2 (8 or 9 inch) white cake layers, baked and cooled
  2. 2 pints fresh strawberries
  3. ¼ cup white sugar
  4. 1 pint fresh blueberries
  5. 2 bananas
  6. ¼ cup orange juice
  7. 1 (3.5 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding mix
  8. 2 cups milk
  9. 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  10. ¼ cup blanched slivered almonds
  11. 12 maraschino cherries

Instructions

  1. Slice strawberries and sprinkle them with sugar. Cut the bananas into slices and toss with orange juice. Combine pudding mix with milk and mix until smooth. Cut the cake into 1 inch cubes.
  2. Use half of the cake cubes to line the bottom of a large glass bowl. Layer half of the strawberries followed by half of the blueberries, and then half of the bananas. Spread half of the pudding over the fruit. Repeat layers in the same order.
  3. In a medium bowl, whip the cream to stiff peaks and spread over top of trifle. Garnish with maraschino cherries and slivered almonds.

Another user also stated that this recipe is good, but better if some considerations are made. Two layers is really too much cake for the standard trifle dish and would seem out of proportion with the rest of the ingredients. I made mine with a single-layer mix (Jiffy yellow cake mix) and it barely fits the deep 12 inch round casserole I had…and that’s without even putting on the whipped cream. I also took liberty with the fruit choices and used a raspberry strawberry blueberry blackberry medley I found at the supermarket. Bananas, while lovely, wouldn’t bring much colour to the dish nor tartness. I get the feeling a variation of this dish served in individual tumbler glasses would look nice, and instead of cubing a whole cake layer one could bake up a pan of cupcakes and slice the cupcakes horizontally to create perfect rounds of cake to layer the dessert. It might even work with wide-mouth preserving jars.

I just used 1 layer of cake and used Byrd’s custard rather than vanilla pudding. Next time I will forget cake layer all together. Loved it.

Excellent! I had lady fingers so used them instead of cake. Either will be great.

Easy, delicious. Used raspberry jam to top 9×12 cake and poured 1/2 c sherry over cake before slicing into 1” pieces. Everyone raved about it. Almost missed taking a pic as someone was digging in!

It was a lot of work making a cake first, but well worth it. Great reviews from my cooking club friends. We all mostly like that it wasn’t super sweet… the fresh fruit was perfect. It would be great for a big crowd too!

This was a huge hit at our dinner party. It wasn’t too sweet and the fresh fruit made it light and delightful. Will totally be making this again and I think this will be one of my new regular dishes I bring to parties.

Great!

I used angel food cake instead of the white cake for a lighter dessert

Very hard to make defining layers with this recipe. That is the key to a proper English trifle. Though the flavor isn’t bad, the banana’s melt far too fast. The cost to make this is not worth the expense. Sorry.

Easy to assemble nice presentation. I substituted pineapple for ?? juice, and used frozen berries that I had on hand. Perfect 4th of July or any summer day.

I made this using only strawberries with the pudding and white cake. The white cake is perfect because it’s not overly sweet! I used 2 quarts of strawberries that I sliced and sprinkled a couple tablespoons of sugar on and then mixed. I ended up making 2 packages of instant vanilla pudding. I also cheated and used cool whip for the topping which I piped on. My family loved this so much! And it was pretty darn easy and impressive! Ty for the recipe!

So delicious.

This dessert was delicious! I brought this to a family pool party, and everyone attending took the leftovers. I received A LOT of compliments. I did not have the cherries or almonds, due to using what had in the house, but it was delicious without. I bought a trifle dish after making this because I will definitely make this again (with cherries and almonds).

I have made trifles before with jam, strawberries and custard and of course, alcohol. But I had to make something for a baby shower without alcohol and more colorful. THIS WAS IT! Zero left overs after the baby shower! Only adjustment that I made was that I used lady fingers. I’ve always use them when making a trifle. But everything else was according to the recipe. I made it the night before and made the whip topping the morning of the shower. Fantastic! I will make this again!

Made this and server for dessert on Christmas day. Made mine using, vanilla and pistachio puddings and Strawberries and Blueberries for fruit. Everyone loved it.
