Ingredients

  1. Deselect All
  2. 2 pounds lemons
  3. 35 ounces vodka
  4. 2 pounds sugar
  5. 35 ounces water

Instructions

  1. Peel all the skins off of the lemons. Only the yellow part should be peeled. Add the lemon peels to the alcohol, and keep for 3 to 4 days in a cool place. Once the alcohol has been infused with the lemon peels, remove the peels from the alcohol. In a separate bowl or glass container, mix the sugar and water together. Add the infused alcohol to the sugar and water mixture. This will turn a beautiful bright yellow color. Keep the limoncello in the freezer. Serve it with any dessert or special occasion.

Following the receipt, I made the first batch and compared it with the commercial brand Caravella limoncello.  My first batch was very sweet compared to Caravella. Also, it had less alcohol taste and less lemon flavor.  To be honest, the Caravella had a way too strong alcohol taste to my liking. I also thought my first batch need more lemon flavor.  So I made a second batch with 1/4th less sugar and 1/4th more lemon peal. The second batch turned out just right for me – less sweet than the original receipt. It also had more alcohol taste than the original receipt but less than Caravella.  The second batch had more lemon flavor than the original receipt and was similar to Caravella. So, if you like a sweet limoncello follow the receipt.  If you like a limoncello less sweet and more alcohol taste follow my second batch receipt.  If you like a limoncello with strong alcohol buy Caravella.

Years ago, we carried the lemoncello home in our carry on because we couldn’t find it in the US. When we served it, our friends swooned. When I began to see it in certain liquor stores, I was just celebrating. I made this recipe and put it in clear bottles for friends. It tasted exactly like the limoncello we first found in the south of Italy. wow! Too good to be true!

Refreshing on a hot day. Keep in the freezer and serve in a frosted glass. Great!

Absolutely spectacular ~ just like the limoncello I enjoy in my favorite Italian restaurant!
