Working outside on a Sunday afternoon and this is a great drink. Light and refreshing. We used raspberries and blackberries instead of strawberries.
Nice summer drink. It was similar to the sangria de cava I had in Barcelona last summer, minus the strawberries and mint, and maybe a tad too sweet. I skipped the strawberries/mint & added a few raspberries instead, more for color than flavor. I like the other reviewer’s suggestion of nectarine. Really, any light, in season fruit will do, as it’s more for decoration than flavor. Next time I will skip or halve the simple sugar.
This was disappointing. Made exactly as written it just tastes like champagne with strawberries . Sorry, but I’m not sure why this one’s called sangria. The addition of a generous amount of apricot brandy really helped the flavor but I am deleting this and wont make it again. First time Bobby Flay has underwhelmed me. 🙁
I first served this for a group of medical students at a year end party and they loved it–had to make a couple of batches. Since then it has been a regular–great ice breaker when guests arrive. Use fruit appropriate to the occasion. tomorrow is the Tree Trimming and it will have raspberries and dried cranberries with thinly sliced green apple. BTW–I never use simple syrup. I think it makes it too sweet.
Made this cocktail a couple of times now, always a hit. I muddled the mint (just enough to release the oils – not to mutilate the leaves so they get stuck in everyone’s teeth) and some strawberries into the brandy, simple syrup and grape juice to get more flavor. This is my favorite summer cocktail! It is so easy and so good. Serves 4 glasses – good idea to have extra on hand for guests because it is always popular!
I made this Cava Sangria to have with appetizers before a dinner of Cedar Plank Grilled Copper River Salmon….everyone wanted to drink it with their Salmon as well….I used sliced fresh nectarines instead of strawberries and it was wonderful…My only advise is double the recipe, everyone will want a couple glasses!!! OUTSTANDING DRINK ALL THE GIRLS LOVED IT. I WILL BE SERVING THIS ONE AT ALL MY FEMALE GATHERINGS.
