Ingredients

  1. 1 gallon prepared baked beans
  2. 1 extra large yellow onion, chopped fine
  3. 12 ounces dark brown sugar
  4. 1/2 cup yellow mustard
  5. 1 3/4 cups ketchup, plus more for garnish
  6. Salt
  7. Pepper
  8. 5 strips uncooked bacon

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 360 degrees F.
  2. Combine beans, onions, brown sugar, mustard, ketchup, salt, and pepper in a large baking dish. Lay bacon strips across top of beans. Squirt ketchup in a zig-zag pattern across the top of beans and bacon. Bake, uncovered, for 1 hour and 45 minutes.

I have been making this recipe since it aired many years ago. They are always a hit. I do use a pound of bacon that I cut up and cook until almost done, drain, and add to the beans and mix it in. Very easy and delicious. I will try the jalapenos next time.

This is very similar to my Mother-in-law’s recipe and we all LOVE it. I do use a lower (325 degrees) temperature.

If you like spiciness, you can also add some chopped jalapeno.
