SOS

  4.5 – 11 reviews  • Beef
Level: Easy
Total: 1 hr
Active: 1 hr
Yield: 6 to 8 servings

Ingredients

  1. 3 pounds ground beef
  2. 1/2 pound butter
  3. 2 cups all-purpose flour
  4. 1 tablespoon chicken base paste
  5. 1 tablespoon seasoned salt, such as Lawry’s
  6. 1 teaspoon granulated garlic
  7. 1/2 gallon 2-percent milk
  8. 2 tablespoons freshly ground black pepper
  9. 1 loaf white bread, sliced
  10. Home Fries, recipe follows
  11. Fruit, for serving
  12. 3 pounds potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  13. 3/4 tablespoon cooking oil
  14. 3 green bell peppers, seeded and diced
  15. 2 white onions, diced

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat and set aside.
  2. Melt the butter in a saucepan over low heat, being careful not to burn it. Slowly whisk in the flour to make a roux. You are looking for a thick consistency. Add the chicken base, seasoned salt and garlic. Slowly whisk in the milk. Turn the heat to high and bring to a boil. Let it boil for 2 to 3 minutes and then lower the heat to medium, whisking periodically until the mixture gets thick. Whisk in the black pepper and browned beef.
  3. Toast the white bread and put the slices on serving plates. Ladle the SOS over the top of the toast. Serve with home fries and a piece of fruit.
  4. Put the potatoes in a large skillet with cooking oil and cook for 10 minutes. Add the bell peppers and onions, and continue cooking until golden brown.

Mom would make this for me and dad who was a retired WWII Marine. She also used tuna fish if no burger at the house or at Easter she would cube up the left over ham and hard boiled eggs and add to the roux mixture instead of the beef. Stick to your ribs goodness.

Saw this episode a few years ago.i grew up around the corner from this place. Hadn’t been back for about 10-15 years. I had to go back to try it… My mom used to make SOS when I was growing up, so i got to go back in time, same donut shop is still next door I used to go to before delivering newspapers weekend mornings. I made this recipe, and its as good as what they serve, thanks guys….

I’ve been making this for many, many years, calling it creamed hamburger over noodles…I brown the ground chuck, drain, add 2 or 3 T. butter and add chopped onion…saute until onion is almost translucent, add 3 cloves of fresh, minced garlic (or more, to taste when garlic is fragrant, I add 3 T. flour, some thyme, salt and pepper and stir gently for a few minutes, and then add the milk, stirring gently until it comes to a slow boil and thickens…if it becomes thicker than you want, add a little chicken broth….yes, chicken broth…serve over extra wide al dente egg noodles…add chopped fresh flat italian parsley over top and WOWWWWW! At least it has always been a favorite of my family…hope you will try and tweak as you see fit! :-

I have never had it with hamburger before, it was really good. I added a few extras. Didn’t have any chicken base, onions, peppers and potatoes so used a full can of chicken broth, about a Tbsp. liquid smoke and a few good shakes of hot sauce. I only gave it 4 stars because of my not having all the ingredients including seasoned salt (used good sea salt I will make this again…and again and again : Will have enough left over to use on top of scrambled eggs in the morning.

After watching Paul’s Coffee Shop on Guy’s Triple D show my husband and I drove to Fountain Valley just to try this place out and found it to be a great spot to eat. My husband was in the Navy and a cook and had made several patches of SOS aboard his ship. We also took our Granddaughter Makayla and she wants to go back again. Thanks for having it on your show.

Awesome. Finally one of my favorite comfort food recipes. Easily made at home. And as good as any SOS I’ve had.
