Ingredients
- One 15-ounce can tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 2 tablespoons cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon chopped garlic
- 1 teaspoon chopped ginger
- 1 teaspoon hot sauce
- 2 teaspoons canola oil
- 1 medium yellow onion, diced
- 1 green bell pepper, seeded and diced
- 1 pound ground pork
- Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
- Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
- 1 small head green cabbage
- 4 hamburger buns, toasted
Instructions
- For the sauce: In a bowl, whisk together the tomato sauce, soy sauce, brown sugar, tomato paste, vinegar, garlic, ginger and hot sauce until blended. Reserve 1/2 cup for the Round 2 Recipe Stuffed Cabbage Rolls, or another use. Set the rest of the sauce aside.
- For the sloppy joes: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the oil. When it is hot, add the onions and peppers and cook until they are soft, about 5 minutes. Push the vegetables to one side of the pan and add the ground pork. Break up any lumps and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cook until the pork is lightly browned, about 5 minutes. If there is a lot of fat in the pan, spoon some of it out and discard.
- Add the sauce to the pan, bring to a simmer and cook until the pork mixture has thickened but is still a bit loose, about 15 minutes. Reserve 1 cup of the mixture for the Round 2 Recipe Stuffed Cabbage Rolls, or another use.
- To serve, remove 2 leaves from the cabbage, roll them up like a cigar and slice into very thin strips. Reserve the remaining cabbage for the Round 2 Recipe Stuffed Cabbage Rolls, or another use. Divide the sloppy joe mixture onto the hamburger buns. Garnish with the sliced cabbage. Top with the bun tops and serve immediately.

Delicious! I made no changes except used beef as I’m not a big pork fan. Great flavor, very yummy!
Best recipe for sloppy joes that I’ve tried. I made a couple of changed since I’m not crazy about the flavor of soy sauce. I added 1/4 c. catsup and 2 T. pineapple juice and it mellowed out the flavor a bit. I also added a small about of finely chopped pineapple to my portion. My husband doesn’t like pineapple so I didn’t add it to the entire dish. I loved the addition of the pineapple. We won’t be buying the canned stuff anymore.
tasty but very rich! next time i will add more vegetables into the mix to balance out the heavy sauce
First time eating a Sloppy Joe and it was delicious!!! I always try to cook easy, quick, and delicious meals like this one. Cant wait today to make my round 2 meal. Un Saludos desde Chihuahua Chihuahua, México!!!
O!M!G! These are ridiculous!!! So good, I will never make the “regular” kind again. The cabbage on top is delicious.
These are delicious! A really nice change from the usual sloppy joes I’ve made in the past. I’ve tried several sloppy joe recipes from this site and they are just “hum-drum” but this is really a great recipe with lots of flavor going on. I used ground pork but I fried it up first so I could drain off any fat before adding the vegtables, but then followed the recipe and it was amazing. We also did the Hearty Skillet Rice with this and there was just so much flavor going on between the sloppy joes and the rice………..simply put……it was a great meal! I can eat the Hearty Skillet Rice all by itself, it’s that good! Thanks Sandra!
This recipe was a huge hit. Not only did my picky eating hubby love it, but my 2 year old did too. I can’t wait to try the round 2 recipe! You must make this!!! It’s super cheap and super delish!
Pretty good recipe. Since I was not going to make the Round 2 recipe, I just scaled back the sauce.
These are so good! I don’t know that I will ever make a “regular” sloppy joe again. I did not put the cole slaw in the sandwich, I made Paula’s “Lemony Cole Slaw” and served it beside the sandwich. Love, love, love this recipe.
We loved these!
