Ingredients
- 1 (13.9-ounce) can bread sticks (recommended: Pillsbury)
- 1 (1-inch) heat proof plastic baby
- 1 (12-ounce) can whipped cream cheese frosting (recommended: Pillsbury)
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- Green sanding sugar
- Purple sanding sugar
- Gold (yellow) sanding sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside.

- Leaving a 3-inch hole in the middle, loosely coil braids around one another on prepared baking sheet. Press ends together.
- Bake in preheated oven for 16 to 20 minutes or until completely golden brown. Remove from oven and cool completely. Carefully insert the baby into the cake in between the seams of the braid.

Please don’t call this a king cake. This will never be a king cake, lol.
This is not a king cake. This isnt even a bare bones attempt at a king cake. This is breadsticks with frosting. To be a bare bones attempt at least use canned cinnamen roll doughb which would put it at least in sight of the neighborhood of king cake. This isn’t.
No, no, no, no, no. PLEASE try it this way instead for a more authentic taste.
Pillsbury also makes danish doyou can buy in grocery store. The proper “semi home made” way to do this. Roll danish dough out, brush with butter or egg wash. Sprinkle with a cinimon sugar mixture. Roll into. Long tube. Then cut in half long ways and twist it together.
for glaze I confectioners ait is the consistency I like. I was bowe’re sensitive about our culture so if you’re going to do something from here do it right
this recipe is a disgrace to a real NOLA king cake. King cake is supposed to have a sweet dough with cinnamon or cream cheese based inside kind of like a cinnamon roll. Sandra should be ashamed to call this bread stick with a glaze on it a King Cake
If I could give this negative stars I would. This in no way tastes like a real King Cake. The only similarity is the three colors of sugar on the top. Real King Cakes are rich and buttery with cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon notes. Dry bread with a disgusting glaze is an insult to King Cakes. The only way someone would call this good is if they have never had a real traditional King Cake.
I LOVE this!! It’s the BEST recipe I’ve made from the Food Network!!! Now I did not use the entire can of frosting…and I used milk instead of heavy cream…but it was SO pretty that I had to take pictures of it…and ALMOST didn’t want to eat it!!
It tasted absolutely DIVINE!!! YUMMY!!!
So now I have something I can make for an occasion…and something I can also make for my family anytime. THANK YOU, thank you, thank you! :
Sandra Lee is a wonderful creative “Idea Person” and I love her show!!! Today I am taking her fun idea for a King Cake and making it instead for my next Baby Shower! I will do the same thing I do when I make a cinnamon rolls with Pillsbury biscuits. I will dip each bread stick into melted butter, then roll them in blended cinnamon sugar prior to braiding. After baking and frosting the braided ring, I will use pink and blue sugar if my Mom guest of honor doesn’t know the sex of her baby, blue sugar if the baby is a boy, and pink sugar if the baby is a girl. The guest who gets the plastic baby will also win a prize. Thank you Sandra!!! I LOVE entertaining and you inspire my creative juices on a regular basis!!!
If I could give this recipe negative stars, I would. This is NOT king cake. King cake is a great deal more like a massive cinnamon roll. There are sometimes fruit or custard fillings. There is also a very simple, sugar based icing and then colored sugar is sprinkled on the top. There are a wide variety of types of King Cakes but none exclude Cinnamon and filling. None have heavily flavored frosting. This is thoroughly disappointing!
Oh yummy! I just ADORE it when Sandra Lee take cultural traditions and completely obliterates their meaning. Kudos!
There sadly is a can of frosting, note the can of whipped cream cheese frosting. LOL Now it is a total abomination!
