Ingredients

  1. 1 (18 1/4-ounce) package German Chocolate Cake Mix
  2. (3 eggs and 1/2 cup vegetable oil, for the cake)
  3. 1 (12-ounce) can evaporated milk
  4. 1 1/2 cups sugar
  5. 3 eggs
  6. 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter
  7. 1 bag sweetened coconut flakes
  8. 1 cup chopped walnuts

Instructions

  1. Bake the cake according to package instructions using the eggs and vegetable oil for the cake.
  2. While the cake is baking, make the caramel sauce. In a saucepan, whisk together the evaporated milk, sugar and eggs. Add the butter and put the pan over medium heat. Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and just starts to bubble, about 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from the heat and cool completely. This can be made a day ahead and refrigerated once cooled. Bring to room temperature when you are ready to use it.
  3. To assemble the trifle in a large trifle bowl: Cut the cake into 1 1/2-inch cubes. Make a layer in the bottom of the dish with 1/3 of the cubes. Drizzle with some of the caramel sauce, enough to moisten the cake but not cover it completely. Sprinkle with 1/3 of the coconut and 1/3 of the nuts. Repeat twice more adding a little extra drizzle of caramel over the final coconut and nuts. (Any extra caramel sauce can be used as a topping for ice cream or pound cake.) Serve immediately or refrigerate until you are ready to serve.
  4. Cook’s Note: the trifle can also be assembled in individual wine glasses or large tumblers.

I loved it. Modified slightly by adding the coconut and walnuts to the sauce at the very end and letting it sit before pouring over cake. It was amazing.

my mom just wanted to make the sauce alone and it was way too sweet. Maybe when the whole trifle is put together its not too sweet but the sauce alone was too sugary, next time I would cut the sugar in half.

I was expecting the caramel sauce to be tan or brown. Instead it is yellow? Tastes good by itself. Haven’t put it together yet. I was nervous that I did something wrong with the sauce. Was looking for some suggestions or help on the sauce here, but there were no suggestions by Ms. Lee. Doesn’t look like she or any of her people even read this stuff. Disappointed. In the recipe it says you can use the any leftover caramel on ice cream??? Don’t see how something so eggy tasting could be used on ice cream. Oh well, I guess I will keep going with the recipe, Will come back here in a few days and let you all know the results.

Someone’s review said toast the coconut…way too dry. Not having the directions…I went by a review that said to cook milk, butter, sugar for 10 min. on med-high heat. I ended up with scrambled eggs about min 8. I ended up using condensed milk because I didn’t have anymore canned milk…worked in a pinch!

I need the rest of the directions. I saw the show and know I need to cook the sauce I just can not remember how long. I am making this for my sons birthday.

I’m making it today for my father in law’s b-day party tomorrow. Looks very tasty, can’t wait to see how it turns out, can’t wait!

I haven’t tried this yet but I did see the show. The directions, as I remember them, are:
Bake chocolate cake as directed on pkg in a 13X9 pan. Mix sugar, milk, eggs, and butter and cook, stirring constantly, until thickened. In a trifle dish (pretty & clear) Layer cake, drizzle with sauce, sprinkle with nuts & coconut. Repeat twice.

Delicious! Very sweet, but very tasty.

Where are the directions? I’ve seen the same comment with no response from you. Do you simply use the “comment options” to guage the popularity of the show by number of responses or are you interested in the actual “CONTENT” of the review?
