Ingredients

  1. 5 large Golden Delicious apples (about 2 pounds), peeled and thinly sliced
  2. 1 cup apple cider
  3. 3 tablespoons brown sugar, divided
  4. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  5. 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, divided
  6. 2 tablespoons butter, divided
  7. 3 slices whole-wheat bread (1-ounce each) crusts included (to make about 2 1/4 cups crumbs)
  8. 3 tablespoons chopped walnuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Combine apples, apple cider, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, vanilla, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until apples are tender but not mushy, about 10 minutes. Stir in 1 tablespoon butter until melted, remove from heat and transfer apple mixture to a 9-inch glass pie plate.
  3. Place bread in food processor and process until crumbs are formed, about 15 seconds. Melt remaining 1 tablespoon butter in microwave for 20 seconds. Not as tasteful as I’d like it to be.

Tasty, quick, easy, and a crowd pleaser, especially at dinner parties, a hello gift. The healthy ingredients makes this recipe a winner all-around.
I use granny smith apples for the slight tartness; and spice up the whole wheat bread topping with a very light sprinkle of cinnamon sugar for extra crunch. Also an excellent way to use those apples that are on their way out.

This is SO good! I’ve even made it the night before, refrigerated it and then baked it in the morning to serve with breakfast… it’s delicious!

My great Aunt used to make Apple Brown Betty and out of nowhere I was craving it yesterday so I made this. It was really easy and tasty, perfect for a chilly fall evening. The walnuts added good flavor and crunch, and when I make it again I will use more. I think some cranberries would add a little depth. Also, I wonder if Granny Smiths wouldn’t be better. But good and very easy, especially topped with some nice vanilla ice cream.

What a great idea to use graham cracker crumbs instead of breadcrumbs! Or maybe 1/2 and 1/2? I didn’t think I would like this recipe until I read that suggestion, thanks!

Great recipe! Just made it this fall with all the apples now on sale. Made it exactly as the recipe says except I used local grown apples instead of the Golden Delicious. Turned out great.

Meh, it’s just okay. My husband and I much preferred Ellie’s Rustic Pear Tart, which you can also find on this website.

This tastes like cooked apples with bread crumbs on top. 1 tablespoon of butter is insufficient for the topping. The cooked apples taste fine but this topping ruins it. Sometimes you can’t cut corners to cut fat and calories. This is an example of that. Was glad my guests brought a dessert to share so I could throw this away. I told everyone not to eat it!

I can apple pie filling in the fall so I used that and substituted graham cracker crumbs for bread crumbs and added pecans instead of walnuts because that’s what I had .really good I think that store bought apple pie filing would work also just make sure there is enough spices in it. Loved the recipe thanks

Great recipe, very easy and very tasty, also the fact that it is healthier than the regular brown betty recipe is a good thought for those of us that have to watch sugars and carbs……I had lots of apples and also substituted the cider for apple juice and it turned out really good, the topping is nice over and very crunchy and not super sweet but very good……I will definitely make it over and over……
