Ingredients
- 5 pounds Yukon gold or russet potatoes
- 1 1/2 sticks softened butter, plus more for baking
- 1 1/2 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup half-and-half
- 1/2 cup cream
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper
- Milk, if needed, for thinning
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
- Peel the potatoes and rinse them in cold water. Chop the potatoes in fourths. Place the potatoes into a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook until fork tender, 20 to 25 minutes.
- Drain the potatoes, and then return them to the pan. With the burner on low heat, mash the potatoes with a potato masher; the more steam that’s released while you mash, the better. Mash for about 5 minutes. Turn off the burner.
- Add the butter, cream cheese, half-and-half, and seasonings. Stir to combine, and if the mixture needs thinning, add milk. Check the seasonings, adding salt and pepper, to taste.
- Pour the mashed potatoes into a large casserole pan. Dot the surface with butter. Cover with foil and bake in the oven for 15 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for 10 more minutes. Serve immediately.

I have made this for years and it is requested even when I am not hosting the Holiday, they ask me to make them!!! Good thing we only make them twice a year
Easy to follow… tastes great! This will be my forever favorite recipe for mashed potatoes… Not for people on a diet!
Thank you for this yummy and festive mashed potatoes casserole dish timing for the holidays …
I do not ever make any other kind. These are PERFECTION 100%!
Make these every Thanksgiving,
Christmas , and tailgating gathering and they are delish!

Can these be made ahead of time? Approximately how far ahead? I have made these twice and they are awesome!! Thank you.
I made these for 8 people for Thanksgiving and they are GONE. My 26 year old niece declared them the best mashed potatoes she’s ever had, and everyone clambered for them when making their leftover to go plates. I used a potato ricer and they were SO creamy and smooth. This will be my go to recipe forever.
This is great but it’s way too much butter, cream cheese and half and half. I used 1 stick butter, 4 oz cream cheese and 1/4 c half and half and the texture is firmer and the taste is more potato and less dairy.
These are my families favorite potatoes. Creamy, flavorful. They go good with gravy or can stand on their own. I love that you can make them ahead of time.
The recipe sounds great, but the cream in the ingredient list is not included in the written instructions. Can somebody please clarify? Either the cream doesn’t belong in the ingredient list, or the instructions should include the cream.
I tried to watch the video to see if that would clear up the mystery and got an endless “loading video” message; used two different browsers with the same result.
