Ingredients
- 8 slices bacon
- 4 slices good-quality dense, white bread, such as Tuscan brea
- 4 to 8 tablespoons butter
- 4 eggs
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
- Lay the bacon in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes, until crispy. Transfer to a plate lined with paper towels to drain.
- Meanwhile, use a 2-inch cookie cutter or small glass to cut a hole in the center of each slice of bread. Heat the butter over medium heat in a skillet large enough to hold the bread slices in a single layer (or use 2 pans). Cook the butter until it turns a golden brown color. Add the bread and cook 3 to 4 minutes, until golden brown and crisp. Flip the bread with a spatula. Now break an egg into the hole in the center of each bread slice. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cook 2 to 3 minutes until the eggs have set on the bottom. Then flip and cook 1 more minute. Transfer to plates and serve with the bacon.

i love this recipe i have two kids 5 and 2 who also love this recipe when i make it i put a lil cheese with it and ketchup seems to be thier preferance but they love it growing up my dad made it for me and called it one eyed jack or eggy toast my mom calls it eggs in a basket. either way its really yummy
Used to have this ALL the time growing up (and I’m fifty) — my Mom called it “Eggs in a Nest” and I’ve made it for my children and grandchildren with equal success… great ole classic! (And Tyler makes EVERYTHING “ULTIMATE”!)
This is easy to make and filling, depending on the bread you use. Jazzes up breakfast a bit.
I have seen this made in different ways, but I like Tyler’s take on it the best. My mom use to put butter in the pan and it did sog up the bread a bit and she didn’t turn the egg over, but I actually think buttering the bread and turning the egg is so much better and I do thank you, Tyler, for a new little twist on an old favorite!
I was pleased to see this old recipie make it on the Food Network. I remember making this one with my mom when she was teaching me to cook. It was from a kid’s cookbook and they called it “eggs in a picture frame”. I am 30 years old and still make it! Simple, easy, and if cooking for kids at breakfast, they love it. I toast the little cutout bread rounds, and that is usually their favorite part.
I liked this idea…It was simple to make but had a great taste. I added a little cheese to the top and let it melt. Made it for my kid brother who liked it and wanted another. Fun for kids and adults!
This is a good recipe if prepared the way Tyler does on the show: Butter the bread, not the pan. If you follow the recipe on the website and saute the butter in the pan, you’re likely to get burned butter and/or soggy bread. Tyler also differs from the recipe by not flipping the eggs a second time, leaving them sunny-side up, but you can do it either way (personally I like them better flipped, over-medium). Also, the bacon is not part of the “Frog in the Hole”; it is served on the side, so you can omit that if you want.
This dish goes by many names. My mother called it a “One-Eyed Sailor.” In America many people call it a “Toad in the Hole,” but in Britain, a “Toad in the Hole” is totally different (basically a pork sausage pudding).
Hey Tyler
I’m jordan and i like your recipe it was delicious but there is one thing you might want to concider instead of using salt and pepper try using Nature’s Seasons seasoning blend by morton or use Spike either of those gives it a better taste. Also the most common name for frog in the hole is Toad in the hole and plus it sounds better.
