Mom’s Russian Tea

Nothing instant or powdery here. A frigid winter day calls for nothing more than pure natural flavors. Great aroma even while it’s brewing. Never has vitamin C tasted so wonderful!

Total Time: 45 mins
Servings: 10
Yield: 10 cups

Ingredients

  1. 9 cups water, separated
  2. 4 family-size black tea bags (such as Lipton®)
  3. 1 cup white sugar
  4. 1 cup pineapple juice
  5. 1 (6 ounce) can frozen orange juice concentrate, thawed
  6. ½ cup lemon juice
  7. 6 cloves whole cloves, or more to taste
  8. 2 cinnamon sticks

Instructions

  1. Bring 8 cups water to a boil in a large stockpot. Remove from heat. Add tea bags; steep, 5 to 7 minutes. Remove and discard tea bags and return pot to medium heat.
  2. Bring 1 cup water to a boil in a separate pot. Add sugar; stir well until dissolved. Pour mixture into the stockpot with the tea. Add pineapple juice, orange juice concentrate, and lemon juice. Stir.
  3. Put cloves in a tea ball and place into the stockpot with the tea-juice mixture. Cook for 10 minutes; do not boil. Turn heat down to very low; let simmer until flavors blend, 15 to 20 minutes more.
  4. Feel free to adjust sweetness to your liking. I’ve not found a substitute like stevia, nectars, etc., that have not changed the overall flavor to where we still like it. This is how our family prefers it.
  5. You can substitute 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon for the cinnamon sticks.
