French Onion Dip

Ingredients

  1. 2 tablespoons canola oil
  2. 1 tablespoon butter
  3. 2 Vidalia onions, sliced into 1/4-inch rings (about 4 cups)
  4. 2 large shallots, sliced into 1/8-inch rings (about 1/2 cup)
  5. 2 cups sour cream
  6. 1 cup mayonnaise
  7. 1 teaspoon celery salt
  8. 1 teaspoon Worcestershire
  9. 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  10. 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. In a large saute pan over low heat, add oil and butter. When butter is melted, add onions and saute stirring occasionally until golden brown and caramelized, about 35 minutes. Add shallots and some salt and saute for 15 minutes more until onions and shallots are dark brown. Remove from heat and let cool for 5 to 6 minutes, then chop into 1/4-inch pieces. Set aside to cool to room temperature. 
  2. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, celery salt, Worcestershire, salt and pepper. Fold in onion mixture. Chill at least 1 hour or overnight, prior to serving.

Followed the recipe to a “T” other than timing of caramelization (heat of my stove different than original) and the dip is incredible!

I made this for Sunday funday and everyone loved it! I found the time for caramelizing the onions was spot on but the shallots could have came out after 10 minutes. They were a little crispier than I wanted after 15 minutes but not burned. I also added an extra 1/2 cup of sour cream because it was a tad salty. I will definitely make again! I actually mixed the wet ingredients and had that chilling while I prepped/cooked the onions/shallots which cut down on the hour of chill time. I was able to serve about 20 minutes after adding the cooled onions, etc.

This recipe is full of flavor town goodness!!! Everybody loves this and wants me to make more so they can take it with them! Eat it with chips, veggies or whatever it’s incredible, it’s even good on a burger!

Mine came out too salty! I’m a salt fiend and so I can’t believe it! But I followed advice of others who commented and added more sour cream and Worcestershire, and also more mayo, and it came out amazing! I will add some parsley tomorrow before serving. Thank you!

This is the best dip I’ve ever tasted.  I made it for my daughter’s 20th wedding anniversary dinner and although everything was great, this was by far my favorite part of the meal.  I served with celery sticks, baby carrots, pita chips and parmesan crisps.  Just amazing.  I’m making it again 1 week later for a dinner party.  This is definitely a keeper
