Pork chops cooked with green beans, mushrooms, and a hot tomato sauce according to my grandma’s recipe. Easy to make, only requires one pan, and tastes fantastic. Enjoy!

Prep Time: 20 mins
Cook Time: 30 mins
Additional Time: 10 mins
Total Time: 1 hr
Servings: 8
Yield: 8 pies

Ingredients

  1. 2 apples – peeled, cored and chopped
  2. ⅓ cup white sugar
  3. ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  4. 2 cups all-purpose flour
  5. 1 teaspoon salt
  6. ½ cup vegetable shortening
  7. ½ cup water, or as needed
  8. 1 cup vegetable oil for frying
  9. 2 teaspoons confectioners’ sugar

Instructions

  1. Place the apples into a saucepan with the sugar and cinnamon, and bring to a simmer over low heat. Cook the apples, stirring frequently, until soft, about 10 minutes; mash the apples with a fork to form a chunky applesauce. Set the apple filling aside.
  2. Whisk flour and salt together in a bowl, and cut in the shortening with a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in water until the dough is moistened, and knead several times just until dough holds together. Place dough onto a floured surface, pat into a round, and roll out 1/8-inch thick. Use a large round cookie cutter (4 inches in diameter) to cut the dough into 8 rounds.
  3. Place a heaping tablespoon of apple filling onto the center of a dough round, and use your finger to moisten the edge of the crust with cold water. Fold the dough over the filling, and crimp the edges with a fork to make a half-moon-shaped pie. Repeat with remaining dough and filling.
  4. Pour the oil into a skillet over medium-high heat, and gently lay 2 or 3 pies into the hot oil. Fry to a golden brown color, 2 to 3 minutes per side. Drain the pies on paper towels. Sprinkle a pinch of confectioners’ sugar over each pie to serve. Allow to cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.
  5. We have determined the nutritional value of oil for frying based on a retention value of 10% after cooking. The exact amount will vary depending on cooking time and temperature, ingredient density, and the specific type of oil used.

These little pies are just wonderful. I was crunched for time so I used a ready made pie crust I already had in the fridge. I added a bit of nutmeg and sprinkled them with a sugar cinnamon mix when they came out of the oil. This recipe is fabulously versatile. I think I’ll make something savory next. Thanks so much for sharing!

These turned out fantastic! I did half white sugar & half brown sugar, like other reviewers I also added cinnamon to the dough, and sprinkled them with cinnamon sugar when they were finished. Quick and easy, with ingredients I always have on-hand! They were gone in minutes, and both my son & husband are asking when I’m going to make them again! Definitely a keeper!! Thank you so much!

Yummy little hand pies! I added a little cinnamon to the dough as others did, and I used apple pie spice (made from this site) instead of just cinnamon. As soon as I pulled them from the oil, I sprinkled them with turbinado sugar. They were certainly ready before an hour’s time, making them a fast little treat when you want apple pie. I scaled the recipe down for my husband and I, which is nice because the 2 of us couldn’t eat a whole baked apple pie. Would make again!

This is a good recipe, but it’s even better with the following changes: 1) Add cinnamon to the pastry. 2) Don’t mash the apples up into a sauce, but just slice them thinly, and it tastes more authentic. 3) to the apple mixture, add the following spices: nutmeg, cloves, and a little more cinnamon. I would highly suggest adding the spices TO YOUR OWN TASTE. I love spices, so I will add a lot more. 3) Instead of using shortening in your pastry, use softened butter. Make sure the butter is still cool from the refrigerator, but able to stir. (By the way, I would suggest doing that ANY time you’re making crusts and pastries). I hope you enjoy this recipe!

I wanted some apple pie but i didn’t want a whole pie because it only my husband and i.I found this recipe for fried apple pies..After reading the recipe i said that this would better than a whole pie. My husband loved them and he is not a big sweet eater…I am. The reason i rated 4 stars is because i am not good at making pie crust. So i used the frozen crust i keep on hand and i added one tablespoon of butter to the apples while they cooking. And i fried in peanut oil and i use cinnamon sugar to put on after they out of oil They came out very very good. Thanks for the recipe. I know i will be making these again real soon.

Thanks for this recipe. My grandmother use to make these when we were kids and find it today on Christmas morning is so special. I believe this is just how she made them.

I did add 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon to the pastry and loved this. Simple to do, nice for brown bag lunches. I will make this again. Thanks!
