Ultimate High-Altitude Chocolate Chip Cookies

  4.4 – 316 reviews  • Drop Cookie Recipes

Who would have thought cinnamon and chocolate would go so well together? If muffins are preferred, feel free to substitute my loaf for them. The cinnamon I use is from Savory Spice Shop® and is distinct from that found in most stores. If you’re buying cinnamon from a typical grocery store, combine it with a drop or two of essential cinnamon oil.

Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 15 mins
Total Time: 30 mins
Servings: 48
Yield: 4 dozen

Ingredients

  1. 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  2. 1 teaspoon baking soda
  3. ½ teaspoon salt
  4. 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  5. 1 cup white sugar
  6. 1 cup packed brown sugar
  7. 3 large eggs
  8. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  9. 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Whisk flour, baking soda, and salt together in a bowl.
  3. Beat butter, white sugar, and brown sugar in a mixing bowl with an electric mixer until smooth. Mix in eggs, one at a time, then stir in vanilla. Add flour mixture and beat just until incorporated. Stir in chocolate chips until evenly distributed. Drop heaping teaspoonfuls of dough 2 inches apart onto the ungreased baking sheets.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven until the edges begin to turn golden, 12 to 15 minutes. Allow cookies to cool for a few minutes on the baking sheets before removing to wire racks to cool completely.
  5. If you like firmer cookies, increase the flour by 1/4 cup.

I live above 6000ft and these turn out great every time. They are easy to make, taste great and make several dozen. I have teens so that doesn’t last long but this is a great recipe!

I used 2 sticks of butter and kept 3 eggs it still worked great. It has taken me time to get better at baking cookies so obviously the results wont be perfect the first time. ~ cosprings native

I live at 5600 ft, cooked at 350 for 13 minutes. I used mini chocolate chips, didn’t change anything else. Perfectly chewy, flavorful cookie. Brilliant recipe!

I’m at 8700 and the only change I made was to add an egg and bake at 375 for 10 min.

Works great at over 11,000 ft in Cusco, Peru. (I couldn’t find chocolate chips so I used generic MnMs and added chopped pecans). First “real” cookie I’ve had in 2 years. Mmmmm.

I live in Denver at 5280 feet above sea level. This is the best high altitude recipe I’ve tried. Others come out either too puffy or flat like pancakes. This recipe produces cookies that are slightly crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside. Definitely a keeper!

I live in Denver at 5280 ft and I made these changes…I used half regular butter and half cannabis butter, 1 tsp of salt and 1 tbsp of vanilla and they turned out amazing! Not too strong in potency and no unusual flavors or colors . Tastes and looks like regular chocolate chip cookies.

I only live part time in Colorado @8000 ft above sea level. I love baking in Illinois. These cookies look great but they are not very tasty . I believe there is too much flour. They taste like baking soda and flour. I’m so disappointed

My daughter and I loved these cookies! We experimented with substituting jellybeans for the chocolate chips and a surprising chewy Easter masterpiece ensued! I will be using this recipe for chocolate chip cookie next. We are at 10k ft in Breck, Colorado and they are the best cookie I’ve ever made here! crunchy and beautifully caramalized outside toward the edges and chewy inside, I imagine even without the jelly beans!

Great cookies

I live at 6100 feet and the cookies turned out well. I added 1/4 cup Dutch cocoa and removed 2tbs flour, but all else per the recipe. I cooked at 350 for 12 minutes and they were done: crisp edge and soft center. I would like them to be a bit chewier, but they tasted great. I dipped the edges in chocolate gnash and pressed a few large milk chocolate chips into the cookie when they came out of the oven (mostly for looks). I will make it again but would love to hear advice on my modification and/or how to make them chewy. I am very new to baking – first time making cookies solo!

I live in Aurora Colorado and baking is quite the challenge at this altitude. I’m so glad I found this recipe because these cookies are PERFECT. I made them for Christmas, and added Christmas M&Ms along with the chocolate chips. These turned out perfectly fluffy and soft. This will be my go to recipe for years to come.

This recipe came out perfect. I live in the Denver area at 5280 ft. Yippee!!!

Baking at 7200 in SW Colorado and recipe worked perfect! I need more high altitude recipes as good as this one!

These were great! I was a little generous with the vanilla but otherwise followed the recipe and they turned out great 🙂

Made this recipe. Flat as a pancake. Our pancakes are fluffier. Read several reviews praising the recipe for high altitude before giving it a shot. We are outside of Telluride,CO at 8,600 ft in elevation. Failed making cookies, cakes and pancakes many times at this altitude. Nothing works well. And this recipe does not either. Taste is okay, but thin, flat cookie. Made exactly to the recipe requirements.

Finally, after many years of trying high altitude chocolate chip cookie recipes, I found one that actually works AND tastes great! I was about to give up making them all together until I read the reviews on this recipe. I decided to give it one more shot and I’m so glad I did. If you’re tired of your chocolate chip cookies looking like cow patties and tasting like crisps instead of cookies, I highly recommend trying this recipe. You won’t be disappointed!

Success at 7100 feet above sea level, just as written! I did add the extra 1/4 c. flour. Thank you!

I cannot thank you enough!!! Moved to 6k ft from Indiana and have cried EVERY TIME I made my family favorite Toll House cookies. These are amazing. Thank you thank you!

The recipe says it’s for “high allititude bakers” but my cookies tutned out very thin like cookie brittle and followed the recipes to the “T”… Will not be making again or recommending to anyone…..

I live at 14,000ft (La Paz, Bolivia) and these were okay. a little flat. But nothing works here so I am not surprised.
