Strawberry Napoleons

This dessert is one of the oldest in the country. While the flavor profile is quite similar to that of an apple pie, there is only one wonderfully roasted, delicate, sweet apple present inside. This apple is still encased in the same pie shell, but it is significantly better because we basted and baked it with a sugar sauce. I strongly suggest serving these with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Prep Time: 25 mins

Total Time: 1 hr
Servings: 8
Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

  1. 1 (3.5 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding and pie filling
  2. 1 cup cold 2% milk
  3. 1 ½ cups non-dairy whipped topping, thawed
  4. ½ (17.25 ounce) package frozen puff pastry, thawed
  5. 1 pint fresh strawberries, thinly sliced
  6. ¼ cup confectioners’ sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Combine pudding mix and cold milk; fold in whipped topping. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  2. Unfold pastry on a cool, lightly floured surface. Cut into 3 strips along fold marks, then cut each strip into four equal pieces. Place 2 inches apart on a baking sheet.
  3. Bake for 15 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden brown. Remove from baking sheet, and cool.
  4. Split pastries into 2 layers, setting the 8 best looking tops aside. Spread 8 bottom layers with dollops of the pudding mixture. Top each with a layer of strawberries, a small amount of pudding, and another pastry layer. (A small amount of the pudding mix on top of the berries will help keep the layers together.) Spread with remaining pudding mixture and strawberries, and top with remaining pastry layers (the best looking ones). Sprinkle with confectioner’s sugar.

My grandmother and mom’s favorite dessert! The perfect amount of sweetness without being too sweet. Have used fresh and frozen strawberries, sometimes add a little strawberry preserves. Always taste delicious!

This is a great recipe. I used Boston cream and whipped cream in it. Combined with the fresh strawberries, it’s to die for. Thank you so much. Rain Dawn

This is excellent! When I made them this time, I tried lemon pudding, and heavy whipping cream for the filling, and lightly sprinkled the strawberry layers with powdered sugar. I also used some lemon sugar and heavy whipping cream as a topper. Served for luncheon with my sister- and mother- in law. We all LOVED the lemon flavor with the strawberries!

I used pistachio pudding which added some extra flavor without making it too strong or sweet. It also added some pretty color. Used frozen strawberries because that was all I had and it came out great but am looking forward to fresh next time. Since there were only 2 of us, I just put together enough for that night, stored strawberries and pudding in fridge and baked pastry in airtight container. The next night I put them together again and they were still delicious. When I make for company, will prep everything the day before and bake pastry the day of. Then put together before serving.

Easy and elegant. Followed suggestion and used cheesecake flavored jello which was great and probably solves the “fake” vanilla flavor problem. Mixed my jello with Trader Joe’s shelf stable whipping cream. Will make again!

I changed the cream. Instead using pudim mix, I made a cream adding 1 can of condensed milk, 1 can of milk, 2 egg yolks, 1 teaspoon of natural vanilla extract and two tablespoon of starch. Cooked in low heat, stirring until thickened. Refrigerate

Easy Oh my yes, delicious, Oh my yes. I used frozen strawberries and so it was dripping with juice. It may not have passed for someone who wanted neat. I was so pleased with this recipe. I thought afterward I would have add blueberries and perhaps some other fruit and let the pastry a little larger to have a dessert. What can I say I loved the ease of making this.

I sweetened the berries with a tablespoon of sugar and used homemade whipped cream. Super easy, beautiful , yummy dessert. Next time I’ll cut the puff pastry sections in halves instead of fourths.

Great for emergency desert– don’t really like instant vanilla pudding.. Much better and worth effort to make pastry cream and fold in some tight whipped cream.. Sugared strawberries or fold in a couple table spoons of grand manier..

I’ve made this recipe and drew raves. The only change I made was substituting a half-cup of almond milk and a half-cup of fatfee half & half for the 2% milk, which made the custard creamier and extremely tastier. This will be a regular treat at our home.
