Hubs made this for my birthday. Loved sour cream chocolate frosting as a kid and it was a wonderful treat. Thank you for the recipe!

Love this recipe! I do not like super sweet frosting. This is the best chocolate frosting I’ve made. I did 1 1/2xrecipe I used 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips and a stick of butter. 3/4 cups sour cream. Then I added sugar until it stuck to the side of the bowl. Delicious!

Very smooth but a little too sweet, too milk chocolate flavored for our taste. Maybe I will try with dark chocolate chips instead.

Excellent results!! And taste awesome

Super creamy and chocolaty. I used it on the zucchini chocolate cake I made from another recipe on this site. My mom and I have our birthdays 4 days apart so we’ve always made our own cake. This must be at least 50 years we’ve celebrated together like this. ??

Very good icing! I can’t stand store-bought icing or most buttercream icings. The sour cream adds such a great flavor to this one! I doubled the recipe to ice a 3-layer cake and that was just the right amount of icing. I decreased the confectioners sugar by just a 2/3 cup total and I added about 5 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa as I was making it because I did agree with other reviewers that it could use a stronger chocolate taste. Otherwise followed the rest of the directions and it came out great!

Very tasty. Doubled recipe but next time will mix with a mixer as the sugar was a bit lumpy, but didn’t change the flavor.

I made this and after looking at reviews, cut down the powdered sugar considerably; I first put 1 cup of sugar in, tasted the frosting & adjusted from there. I also didn’t have any sour cream so I used plain yogurt. The results were I had a frosting that wasn’t overly sweet, and had a nice tang to it from the yogurt. I would definitely use the yogurt again. And I’d like to try one of the reviewers’ suggestion who used semi-sweet baking chocolate; I don’t like using chocolate chips a lot but that’s all I had this time. All in all a good basic recipe to begin with.

Easy and delicious!

This is good stuff. I made 1 and a half batch and it was enough to frost a ten inch, two layer cake and also pipe the edges.

Great recipe – doesn’t need to be tweaked. Thanks for sharing!

So happy for the reviews. I didn’t have chips so I was able to use the cocoa powder I had. Just added enough sugar to my taste.

My go to frosting, perfect every time. I only use 1 3/4 cups confectioners otherwise too sweet.

I usually make chocolate cream cheese frosting but didn’t have any cream cheese on hand. I came across this recipe and decided to give it a try. I wasn’t disappointed! It has a very similar tang to cream cheese icing. I don’t like a very sweet icing, so I added the sugar is small batches until the sweetness was to my liking. I also sifted in a couple of tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa to boost the chocolate flavour. This is a great frosting for spreading (not for piping). I will definitely be making this again!

This recipe needs a lot of changes… it’s way to sweet. I had a delicious cake made and I put this stuff on it and it totally was ruined

I used recommendations in the comments. I substituted unsweetened baking chocolate and added 2T dark coffee. Far less sweet that way with a great chocolate flavor. The sour cream gives it a great flavor sensation for those who enjoy trying new flavor combinations. Easy texture to ice the cake. Pretty cake without even trying very hard.

I made it just like the recipe said but after tasting it decided to add more melted butter/chocolate because it was too sugary for my taste.

Delicious! I did make the following changes: used bittersweet chocolate chips, added 2 oz of unsweetened chocolate, decreased sugar to 2 cups. Wonderful!

This might be my favorite chocolate frosting. It’s not overly sweet and the sour cream adds just the right touch of tanginess to make it interesting. I also appreciate how quickly it comes together. I follow the recipe exactly.

I got a lot of compliments on this frosting. I, however, am not a big fan of sour cream frosting and didn’t think about it until I tasted it. It definitely makes it tangy. With that said, I am a buttercream frosting fan but this frosting really added a richness to the whole cake.

Easy ! Light flavour which was a nice change from traditional chocolate icing.
