This sugar cookie frosting recipe is my go-to for decorating cookies and cakes since it works so well and has a lovely smooth finish. If desired, add seasoning or food coloring.

Total Time: 10 mins

Yield: 3 cups

Ingredients

  1. 1 (16 ounce) package confectioners’ sugar
  2. 2 egg whites
  3. ¼ cup water, or as needed

Instructions

  1. Beat sugar and egg whites in a large bowl using an electric mixer on low speed until evenly combined and shiny, about 3 minutes.
  2. Add water gradually, beating on medium-high speed until icing is smooth and reaches desired consistency, about 5 minutes.
  3. You can mix the icing by hand using a wooden spoon if preferred. Add the confectioners’ sugar gradually, mixing well after each addition until it is well incorporated with the egg whites.
  4. For a thicker consistency, add more confectioners’ sugar.
  5. This recipe contains raw egg. We recommend that pregnant women, young children, the elderly, and the infirm do not consume raw egg. Learn more about egg safety from our article,

The granddaughters were over and I was not at my home so I did not have my supplies on hand and of course it’s not a trip to Gigi’s without making cookies – and theirs ONLY ONE COOKIE ….nothing else will do. So I had to find an icing with what I had and this one turned out fabulous! They just added some candy to the top and they were as happy as could be. I’m going to use this on my back to school cookies and beach cookies and hope I get the same response .
