Snickerdoodles I

  4.7 – 785 reviews  • Sugar Cookie Recipes

My mum has been making these delicious and simple cookies for at least 50 years. Everyone always asks for the recipe when I take them somewhere.

Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 10 mins
Additional Time: 5 mins
Total Time: 30 mins
Servings: 36
Yield: 3 dozen

Ingredients

  1. 1 cup shortening
  2. 1 ½ cups white sugar
  3. 2 eggs
  4. 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  5. 1 teaspoon baking soda
  6. 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  7. ½ teaspoon salt
  8. 2 tablespoons white sugar
  9. 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. In a medium bowl, cream together the shortening and 1 1/2 cups sugar. Stir in the eggs. Sift together the flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt; stir into the creamed mixture until well blended. In a small bowl, stir together the 2 tablespoons of sugar, and the cinnamon. Roll dough into walnut sized balls, then roll the balls in the cinnamon-sugar. Place them onto an unprepared cookie sheet, two inches apart.
  3. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven. Edges should be slightly brown. Remove from sheets to cool on wire racks.

So good! A little crisp on the outside and light & airy inside. Yum! Definitely a keeper! (We used a GF flour for allergy purposes & they still turned out perfectly)

I’ve used this same recipe for 45 years. Needless to say, it makes the perfect snickerdoodle. I bake for 8 minutes and use the bread trick in my containers. They are the only snickerdoodle for my family!! My original recipe came from an old Menonite cookbook. Yummy.

I made these for our bowling league and everyone loved them! I did read some of the reviews and agree that when baking, only do it until set. Otherwise they get hard and don’t retain their chewy center. Also, I haven’t tried it with butter flavored shortening yet, but I plan on trying it next time after seeing all of the recommendations!

I add 1 t. Vanilla and a t. Cornstarch for extra chewiness. No one can eat just one!

The 10-minute baking time is for real. They are very soft when they come out of the oven but they harden up. Also don’t refrigerate the dough – make sure it is soft when you roll the balls. If they’re too hard they pick up only cinnamon and no sugar. Great flavor.

Puffed up. Came out more like scones than cookies.

I may have already written a review a long time ago, but I still think…PERFECT! Just like mom’s.

Turned out beautiful! Tastes delicious. The one suggestion I tried from other members- try butter- flavored shortening. Works like a charm. Yum yum. Fool-proof recipe, even my toddlers helped roll dough into balls and had fun dipping cinnamon + sugar mixture! Just like with my mom when I was a girl.

I make Snickerdoodles for my family all the time using this great recipe. Only I use all butter. Turns out perfect. To each his own.

Fantastic recipe! I followed it exactly and they turned out perfectly. As other reviewers have mentioned, just make sure not to over-bake. They may seem undercooked at 8 minutes but trust me, they will harden up into the crunchy exterior, chewy center as they cool.

it was good except i burnt it….. oops

This recipe was delicious! I used butter instead of shortening because we didn’t have any shortening, and it didn’t make a difference. I did end up keeping these in the oven for an extra few minutes since my baking pan size caused the cookies to somewhat melt together (it like squish? I don’t understand how to describe it). Overall, though, this was a great recipe, and when I make it again I’ll probably make a half recipe

All I can say is YUM!! They are my fiancé’s favorite!
