A wonderful, simple dessert dish that I inherited from my grandmother that is ideal for the beginning of fall. If desired, top with whipped cream and garnish with pecan slices and a few stray graham cracker crumbs.

Ingredients

  1. ¾ cup butter, softened
  2. ¾ cup white sugar
  3. ¾ cup peanut butter
  4. 2 eggs
  5. 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
  6. 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  7. ¾ teaspoon baking soda
  8. ½ teaspoon salt
  9. 1 ½ cups rolled oats
  10. 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  11. 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  12. ½ cup confectioners’ sugar
  13. 2 tablespoons evaporated milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Grease a 10×15 inch jellyroll pan.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter, white sugar and 3/4 cup peanut butter until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Combine the flour, baking soda and salt; stir into the peanut butter mixture. Mix in the oats until evenly distributed. Press the dough evenly into the prepared pan.
  3. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes in the preheated oven. Remove from the oven and sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the top. Return to the oven for 2 more minutes, or until chocolate chips are shiny. Remove and spread the chips out smooth. Set aside to cool. In a small bowl, mix together the remaining peanut butter, confectioners’ sugar and evaporated milk until smooth. Spread over the chocolate layer when cool. Cut into bars.

I made these bars in a 9”X13” pan. I used Old Fashioned Oats and a huge Dove milk chocolate bar. They took a little longer to cook. They were dry and crumbly but my husband loved them very much! They needed semi-sweet chips instead. The icing is delicious!! I’ll make them again but likely use quick oats and maybe a little cinnamon.

Very good. I used natural peanut butter so I added more salt to the bar cookie layer and the frosting, and a little vanilla to the frosting too. As another reviewer said, bake at 350 18 min And I ended up drizzling on the frosting but they look great.

I made a couple of small changes, but regardless this is a great recipe from what I tasted. I cut the recipes in half using the recipe calculator. I added the chips into the batter, but I used some cinnamon chips that I had leftover. I didn’t add the icing because I just ran out of powdered sugar making cupcakes a few days ago. These bars are crumbly, so be warned about that, but the taste is amazingly delicious!

I put them in a 9×13. They taste like oatmeal cake with a little peanut butter flavor. They are good, but not what I was hoping for. If I make them again I will cut the oatmeal by 1/4-1/2 cup.

These were not anything special in my opinion, the bottom was very dry and the top didn’t quite make up for it. If I was going to make them over, I would have put the chocolate chips in the dough.

These were just like the bars I had in elementary school growing up! My dough did not spread to fill out the whole pan, but it didn’t matter. I broke up chocolate bars instead of using chips. I did half with milk chocolate, and the other half with semi-sweet. Everyone had their favorite! I had to eat 4 bars before deciding I didn’t have a favorite! Everyone asked me for the recipe. Peanut butter bars are not known here in England (or they just aren’t popular), but they were a big hit with all my UK friends- even with the people who don’t like peanut butter!

Excellent! My kids, my husband and I, and my in-laws all LOVED this bar! I simplified it by mixing the chips in the batter, then baked it at 350 for 18 minutes. I totally skipped the frosting and no one missed it. My mother-in-law made sure she had this recipe when they left! I made this twice in one weekend – this is definitely a keeper!
