Reviews
I loved it. At first I thought it was too runny, but I added a bit more oats and they turned out pretty good. This is my second time making them from this recipe.
I intended to make these for a church function and boy, am I glad a did a test run first! I feel as though I wasted a lot of good ingredients. I read the comments where some people found it was too runny and others suggested to get the sugar mixture to a hard ball stage. I did that and ended up with a mess. Cookies will not form at all. To top it off, the “dough” is sickeningly sweet, and I used unsweetened coconut. I’m not wasting any more time on this recipe.
I have made these for half a century, most are complaining they are too runny. Here is the reason. The ingredients you boil must be done so until you achieve a rolling boil, reduce heat to medium, stirring constantly, and only when this mixture is at the ‘hard ball’ stage (drop a couple of drops into a glass of cold water, if the ball does not disintegrate and remains intact, it is ready) is it ready to be mixed with the dry ingredients. I usually use a pot big enough to take the entire recipe and mix the dry stuff quickly and start dropping by teaspoonful onto waxed paper. If you dawdle, they will harden in the pot. So the hard ball stage must be met before you finish these cookies. I have tried removing them before they are ready and it is a soft runny mess. Hope this helps, because it is a great little snack, done right.
Way way way too much sugar in recipe. Cut the sugar in half (or more), and it’s like my mom used to make. Yummy.
When I made these, they turned out just fine. I love them gooey when they’re warm. You have to put them in the fridge overnight to get the hard texture I think others are looking for. And I let my sugar and cocoa powder mixture boil for a few minutes. I have been using this recipe for years! Love them!
I followed this recipe as written with one exception, i withheld a 1/4 cup of the sugar/butter/milk mixture. It just looks like too much liquid to solid ratio, they turned out perfect! Always a favorite treat with Hubs
Great flavor, but seemed a bit runny after I mixed it. I let it cool for a bit before I spooned them out.
This recipe was delicious but sweet. I expected that obviously because it called fit a lot of sugar lol I have not made any changes. With most deserts I try to lessen the amount of sugar.
Very dense macaroon, won’t make it again.
Way too watery!
Fabulous,a bite sweet for me. I will adjust sugar next time, but they are wonderful.
I made these, but they were too runny. So I added another cup of coconut. And put in about 1/ 2 cup of chopped nuts. They formed perfect.
Yummy
Horrible!! Cook time is way off. I was in a rush and didn’t read the reviews, it’s just macaroons, shouldn’t be hard to screw up. If you ‘cook’ as suggested you get a gloopy mess that won’t set, even in the fridge.
My mother in law makes these but she uses 3 cups oats and adds 1T vanilla.
Yes, the recipe didn’t call for Vanilla extract… I added a Teaspoon. It brings out the Chocolate flavor…
They were sooooo sweet. Couldn’t even taste the chocolate or coconut through all the sugar.
I followed recipe but let the sugar mixture boil for 2 minutes. Came out perfect. Cooled downwind became solid.
Love love love!!! Just like grandma used to make.
I agree with some other reviewers here — the sauce needs to boil for 2-3 minutes to thicken before adding it to the dry ingredients. Also, two cups of sugar makes VERY sugary macaroons! I will cut to one cup next time.
WAY too sweet. Even with unsweetened coconut it was intensely sweet. However the texture was perfect and I think if I reduced the sugar it would be delicious. I agree that it needed more oats. And I let it boil 2 full minutes so it’s not because of that.
