Kirsten’s Dark Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars

  4.6 – 95 reviews  • Bar Cookie Recipes

My CSA box contained delicata squash, but because I was short on time, I chose to slice it and bake it in the oven with some curry spice and maple syrup. tastes fantastic over salad or as a side dish.

Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 40 mins
Total Time: 55 mins
Servings: 24
Yield: 2 dozen bars

Ingredients

  1. 1 cup butter, melted
  2. 1 cup dark brown sugar
  3. ½ cup white sugar
  4. 2 eggs
  5. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  6. 2 cups all-purpose flour
  7. 1 teaspoon baking soda
  8. 1 teaspoon salt
  9. ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  10. 2 cups dark chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Mix butter, brown sugar, and white sugar together in a bowl; beat it eggs and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy. Stir flour, baking soda, salt, and baking powder into the creamed butter mixture until batter is well mixed. Fold chocolate chips into batter; spread into the prepared baking dish.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 40 minutes. Cool before cutting into bars.

These worked out really well. I will make them again

Great recipe! Versatile too, works with browned butter ( in place of regular melted butter) , milk chocolate chips, pecans or walnuts, flaked sea salt and skor bits sprinkled on top near the end of baking! Freezes well ! Also shortened the bake time to 30 minutes!

Thanks for sharing this excellent and easy recipe! I followed recipe exact (except for baking time) last week and they were so good I’m about to go make some more now! 30 minutes on 350 is perfect!

This was a great recipe! My only substitution was to use light brown sugar instead of dark. The cookies came out perfectly.

Delicious!!! PERFECT recipe!! 30 minutes was perfect timing for clean toothpick check.

The flavors are excellent and the bars are so easy to make! Next time I’ll double the recipe to make a bigger batch because it didn’t take up that much space in the mixer bowl (it just puffs up a lot). I took away a star because the cooking time is just so odd. As others have recommended, I brought it down to 30 mins – the top looked super hard and done but the inside was still raw….so then I put it back in for 5 mins. at a time and it wasn’t until another 15 mins later that the inside was finally not raw. After it cooled, it hardened more and wasn’t as moist as I’d like it to be. So I haven’t figured out how to get it just right yet!

As mentioned by another member, I added some nuts (walnuts), and also baked them for 30 minutes. I can’t imagine anything else that would improve them. The recipe is a really solid one. Of course, I understand some people don’t like nuts or are allergic, so there’s that.

These are delicious. Buttery and crisp on the edges and soft and chocolately in the middle. I liked the one bowl method, saves on dishes. I baked mine 30 min based on reviews and that was just right.

I used light brown sugar and semi sweet chocolate chips because that’s what I had. I also added a cup of chopped nuts. They turned out so good. Delicious recipe!

These are so good. Everybody raved about them!!!!

They’re delicious and easy! I didn’t think there was enough batter for a 9×13 pan, so I used a 9×9 pan, then they rose a lot! I cooked them for 30 minutes, then turned the oven off and left them in for about 10 more minutes after reading the reviews about cook time.

Best Chocolate Chip bar cookies I’ve ever made. Keep an eye on the baking time.

Fantastic!! I’ve made these 3 times now and each time they’ve been met with everyone asking if they’re really homemade and for the recipe! In my experience (in 2 different ovens) they took at least an hour to cook through, but came out perfectly. Plus, they’re extremely easy to make! I definitely recommend!

Good recipe overall, but agree with the other reviews that the baking time is too long. Added a cup of toasted pecans and baked it for 22 minutes since the toothpick test indicated it was done.

These are really good!!!! I only had mini chocolate chips so that’s what I used. I added chopped pecans too and baked exactly 30 minutes like other reviewers said and they are perfect!!! They stayed on the softer side, which is what I hoped for, probably by only baking them for exactly 30 minutes! This is a new favorite!

These were tasteless and poor texture. Would not recommend

Adjust oven temp for glass Pyrex to 325; check for doneness at 30 minutes/ trust your smell! 40 minutes was too long. I added 1/2 tsp almond extract and 1/2 tsp cinnamon

so good and buttery! great as is, but I’ve also made this with only light brown sugar and chopped up peanut butter cups instead of chocolate chips.
Carlos Delgado
The batter seemed a little thin so I added at least 4 T. of flour. Baked them about 38 min and they were excellent.

After reading the other reviews, I decided to try this recipe and now have saved it to my recipe file because it is AWESOME!!!! To be fair, I did add a cup of extra chunky peanut butter and used 1/2 cup of the coconut oil/avocado oil stuff and 1/2 cup butter. Otherwise, I followed the recipe exactly. My neighbors and my husband fell in love with them. This is a great recipe, Kirsten!

This is a great recipe, delicious. I followed it exactly, with the exception of the bake time, I cut it to 30 – 35 minutes. Turned out perfectly. So simple to make! I will make them again.
