Want to stop discarding stale bananas? This recipe will have your kids coming back for more while using up those bananas in a moist, tasty, and low-fat way. There is no white sugar present. Applesauce, non-fat Greek yogurt, and plain old maple syrup all work wonderfully as substitutions for the traditional banana bread recipe.

- ½ cup confectioners’ sugar

We loved this pie – however, I made my own pie crust (Grandma’s Secret Pie Crust from this site). I wanted a deep dish pie so I doubled the apples and added 10 minutes to the baking time. I mistakenly put the apples in the pie shell first and then poured the filling over the top of the apples and it still came out great.
I could see why an apple pie purist wouldn’t like this recipe. I thought it was excellent and I will make this again. The only things I did different were a lattice shell topping and I used 3/4 teaspoons of cinnamon in the apples. I’m glad that I did not double the icing as some suggested ( I drizzled on the lattice top with a spoon). The amount of icing in this recipe is the perfect amount. Any more icing and the pie
This was outstanding! But as usual I read the reviews and couldn’t leave the basic recipe alone. My family likes really flavorful foods, so I really upped the cinnamon, added clove, and CARDAMOM. I used a large pie pan with 4 Granny Smith’s, and could easily have added a fifth, but I like tall pies with lots of fruit.
No changes.
Every time I make this pie everyone goes nuts!! The vanilla custard is delicious! I make it just as is although depending on the size on the apple, it may need more than 2…I usually at least 3 if not 4. Give this recipe a try when you’re trying to impress – it’s a winner for sure!
I’ve made this pie several times over the years when I came across it on “All Recipes”. It IS an excellent one for sure. Alterations: Added one more apple, substituted white sugar for BROWN, INCREASED cream & milk slightly & ADDED a heaping handful of butterscotch chips when taken off the stove to cool.
Very good. Followed directions exactly. I used 2 large granny smith apples and it was fine. 3 might be better, but 2 was fine. I will be making this again, for sure!
We use three large apples per pie. Definitely double or triple the flour/cinnamon mixture and I like to add dashes or a few sprinkles of allspice, nutmeg and a pinch of ginger to that as well. Finally, we add cinnamon to the glaze and this pie is perfect and has been a part of our family Thanksgiving for the last decade.
It went so great.
This pie is amazing! I added nutmeg, did half brown sugar and half white sugar, and precooked the apples. The flavors are amazing! I oped out of the graze.
This was very tasty. We liked the pie very much. Can’t really mess up apple pie, and the glaze was a nice change from the norm.
I made this Apple pie today, oh my God!!! This is AWESOME pie. It’s rich but good.
Wonderful recipe! Snowed in today so I made this recipe exactly except used 3 Granny Smith apples. Did not have heavy cream so substituted: 3/4 cup milk with 1/4 cup melted butter. Used half of this mixture to substitute for the heavy cream. Came out perfect. Will definitely make this one again.
Left off the glaze. Too much sugar for me. and the pie was still tasty. Excellent!
This recipe is amazing. Everyone loved it and said it was the best apple pie I have made. This will become our new favorite for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Update: i entered this pie in a auction and it sold for $700.00 the bidder was not disappointed in his purchase.
I made this pie and I was a bit unsure mixing custard and glaze with traditional apple pie , but I was pleasantly surprised !!!! It was amazing! I will only make this from now on extremely happy
Excellent way to use up extra apples, everyone really loved the creamy filling, not too sweet!
My twin sister and I entered this pie into a contest we did everything right with the ingredients and the process but unfortunately we lost, we didn’t even place 1st through 3rd but it came out great and tasted amazing! So we have no clue what those judges were tasting but overall this was a great pie and we encourage everyone to try this pie!
I used half and half instead of the milk and cream and three apples.
I made this pie exactly to the recipe and it was delicious! In fact, the reason I made it was to enter it in a pie contest/auction at our church. Out of over 20 pies entered, this one came in second place and brought $85 at the auction, which was raising funds for some much needed equipment upgrades to our sound system. Thanks to the original creator of this recipe. I will definitely make it again to enjoy at home.
This will become your new favourite go to apple pie recipe! The combination of the custard like bottom layer combined with the apples gives this pie a wonderful flavour profile. The glazed topping is the “icing on the cake” so to speak! This recipe is a real winner! You won’t be disappointed
