German Chocolate Thumbprint Cookies

  4.5 – 80 reviews  • Thumbprint Cookie Recipes

German chocolate icing is placed on top of a chewy chocolate cookie. If you have any leftovers to freeze, they freeze beautifully and are quite tasty. You won’t be satisfied if you use canned frosting instead.

Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 26 mins
Additional Time: 5 mins
Total Time: 46 mins
Servings: 60
Yield: 5 dozen

Ingredients

  1. 1 cup white sugar
  2. 1 cup evaporated milk
  3. ½ cup butter
  4. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  5. 3 egg yolks, beaten
  6. 1 ½ cups flaked coconut
  7. 1 ½ cups chopped pecans
  8. 1 (18.25 ounce) package German chocolate cake mix
  9. ⅓ cup butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. In a heavy 2-quart saucepan, combine sugar, milk, 1/2 cup butter, vanilla and egg yolk. Blend well. Cook over medium heat for 10 to 13 minutes or until thickened and bubbly. Stir frequently. Stir in coconut and pecans. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature.
  3. Reserve 1 1/4 cups of the topping mixture and set aside. In a large bowl, combine cake mix, melted butter and remaining topping mixture. Stir by hand until thoroughly moistened. Shape dough into 1 inch balls. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Using your finger, make an indention in center of each ball. Fill each indention with 1/2 teaspoon of reserved topping.
  4. Bake for 10 to 13 minutes in the preheated oven. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

I used to have this recipe or one very similar but lost it over the years. These were perfect, going to be a great addition to the snack tins I’m making for the holidays. I wish I had found this version before I made the first batch with another recipe that just aren’t as good.

This is an awesome and easy recipe. Unbelievably good. The topping made enough for 2 boxes of German Chocolate Cake dough. In my kitchen one box made 48 cookies. Very pleased and will look forward to baking this recipe again!

I took the advice of other reviewers. Adding the 1/2 cup of semi sweet chocolate chips, the 1/2 cup of flour and chilling the dough. I will only add 1/4c of flour next time. The dough was pretty crumbly and took great effort to correct. However, the taste was phenomenal! My fella is enjoying them tremendously!

I made as directed and they are delicious! These are not the prettiest cookies but I made half the batch in a muffin tin and they turned out better looking and just as delicious.

I loved this cookie and my kids who hate coconut absolutely loved it. The cookie does not come out flat as it depends how deep you press on the dough and the spooning of the mixture. What I do as an extra is add a small bag of pudding mix to the mixture for the cookie and it comes out much chewier (we love our cookies this way) however I’ve made these cookies as is and they come out terrific either way. Happy baking!

As some of the reviewers stated, I added 1/2 cup flour. They turned out perfect. I believe this is necessary because the recipe calls for an 18.25 oz cake mix. The cake mixes today are 15.25 oz. So by adding the 1/2 cup flour, it compensates for the less amount of cake mix.

Very delicious. Screwed up the recipe a bit by adding a can of evaporated milk instead of a cup, but I just cooked it a little longer and they turned out fine.

I did add flour to this recipe as others recommended. and I will make this recipe again. The amazing thing to me about this is that it was really not to sweet.

This recipe was so easy to follow & the cookies taste amazing…..everyone thinks they were so hard to make , I did as everyone else suggested & added flour to the cookie batter. I loved that I had leftover batter to make another batch the next day.

Beauty is only skin deep! These are delicious. I took others’ advice and added 1/2 cup of flour, and I chilled the dough in between pans.

I added 1/2 c of flour to the cake batter, as well as 1/2c of mini semi-sweet chips, and chilled for 2 hours. Then I used a Tbsp measuring cup to get consistent sized cookie balls, and put them into a mini muffin tin w/ a 1/4 tbsp of the filling in them and baked for 12 minutes. Let them cool before taking them out of tin and they turned out perfectly

I found this recipe in an old cookbook and decided to try it since I had most of the ingredients. However, I noticed the cake mix I had was only 15.25 ounces, 3 ounces less than the recipe called for. I had a dark chocolate cake mix, so I measured out 3 ounces of that (using a scale, not a measuring cup) and added it to the dough. I then made the recipe exactly as written, and they were delicious! They received rave reviews from family and co-workers.

I followed the recipe exactly. I did not add flour or refrigerate. The filling was the exact amount needed. The cookies did not spread they are perfect thumbprint cookies with perfect amount of filling. I used real butter. I beat the egg yolks until a creamy consistency. I baked cookies 12 min let them cool on cookie sheet for 5 mins then removed to wax paper to finish cooling (I don’t have a cooling rack). I got 4.5 dozen. They taste delicious. I will definitely make them again. I think this will be one of my annual Christmas cookies.

My husband loves German chocolate cake and I thought these would be a fun treat. They’re wonderful and the whole family loves them. I stick to the recipe but reduce the sugar in the topping by a small amount, as its pretty sweet. These cookies aren’t pretty but sure are delicious.

Will definitely make again. My husband that doesn’t even like coconut loved them. This recipe is going to my stash of favorites forever. I did follow the suggestions of adding 1/2 cup flour and 1/2 cup of chocolate chips to dough. My oven bake a little hotter than most, so I reduced the heat to 325 and baked for 11 minutes. That was the magic combo for me.

I drizzled sweetened condensed milk over the top and it made them even better… Heavenly!

Good recipe. I didn’t have a problem with mine running. My cake mix was a 15.25 oz so I added 3 oz of cake upsizer

I think that one thing that is missing out of the instructions is that when you use the cake mix only use the powder part of the cake mix do not follow the instructions on a cake box to where it tells you to add water a and oil if you’re trying to make cookies the only thing you need to combine is the cake mix with the toppings mixture along with the melted butter. I made the mistake by following the instructions for the cake mix and trying to combine it with the homemade topping mixture and melted butter and of course it was too runny so I was left making a cake after all.
