Fried Apple Pies

For a fudgy, chocolatey dessert that is wonderfully indulgent, make this chocolate mug cake in the microwave. It’s a fantastic recipe for those evenings when I need a delicious dessert that can be made in under 10 minutes! To make it even richer and more gooey, stir in a few chocolate chips.

Total Time: 1 hr
Servings: 8

Ingredients

  1. 2 cups all-purpose flour
  2. 1 teaspoon salt
  3. ½ cup shortening, chilled
  4. ½ cup cold water
  5. 2 apples – peeled, cored and diced
  6. ¼ cup white sugar, or to taste
  7. ⅛ teaspoon ground cinnamon, or to taste
  8. 1 quart oil for frying, or as needed

Instructions

  1. Make pastry: Sift flour and salt together in a large bowl. Cut in shortening with 2 knives or a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Dotdash Meredith Food Studios
  3. Add cold water, 1 tablespoon at a time, tossing with a fork, until flour mixture is moistened. Do not add more water than you need: when you squeeze a handful of moistened pastry mixture, it should form a ball. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

  5. Make filling: Place apples in a saucepan. Combine sugar and cinnamon; pour over apples and toss to coat. Cook, covered, in a saucepan on low heat until soft; mash with a fork to make thick applesauce. Set aside to cool.

  8. Roll dough on a lightly floured surface to 1/8-inch thick; cut out eight 4-inch rounds with a large cookie cutter.

  10. Place 1 heaping tablespoon of applesauce in the center of each pastry round. Moisten edges with cold water, fold in half, and press the edge with a fork to seal. Repeat with remaining pastry and filling.

  12. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large saucepan to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  13. Lower pies carefully into the hot oil in batches. Fry until golden brown, about 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain. Repeat with remaining pies.

  15. You can also fry these in melted shortening or lard.
  16. We have determined the nutritional value of oil for frying based on a retention value of 10% after cooking. The exact amount will vary depending on cooking time and temperature, ingredient density, and the specific type of oil used.

So yummy! Love a little sugar and cinnamon sprinkled on the pies while they’re still hot. Also…the directions say put the apples in the middle of the round and the photo shows to out it off-center which works best so it folds easier.

they were great only thing i changed was I didn’t mash the apples

This was the first time I’ve ever made fried pies. Only problem I was into was not having enough dough. But now I know I’ll make more next time.

I did not have shortening but used plant-based butter for the dough. Despite how they look, for my first time I think they came out ok. They taste really really good though.

Very yummy but had to make more filling!

Made this mainly for the crust portion. Of course I had to include the apple portion!

So good!! Thank you for the recipe! The only change I made was to double the apple filling. I got 9 pies out of this! I made the filling and dough the day before. Assembling the pies and cooking them was easy! What I thought would be a big task and messy kitchen was very manageable! I’m going to make some people very happy!

The recipe is awesome… Loved every bit of it. I used butter instead of shortenings and half tsp of cinnamon.. But thank you so much for the recipe

Brilliant! I only half-way mashed the filling, leaving it a bit more chunky. It was a hit!

They look and taste delicious!

I wanted to make this recipe for two reasons 1. All the reviews comparing this hand pie to McDonald’s 2. The simple filling calling for only 2 apples. I followed the recipe exactly as written including the crust. This recipe is very good and the only reason I didn’t give it 5 Stars is bc I had a decent amount of dough left over and no filling. I plan on making these again w my personal tweaks & I would for sure share this recipe w others. Thank you for sharing!

The filling for this was excellent, however do not use the biscuits for the pies big mistake on my part. Not only do they not cook up correctly but they tasted like biscuits not flaky crust. Will make again but will not use biscuits.

Very good. I don’t like to modify other’s recipes but in this case I must. If you like the little bites of apples you must have more filling… more apples. Made dough exactly as printed. Filling not so much. We wanted the chunks. There just wasn’t enough per ratio to the dough. So my recommendation is to double the filling and fry away. Also we did a mixture of powder sugar and cinnamon sprinkled on top…. between 3 people they are all gone. Defiantly will make again.

A bit on the small side, so I increased size of dough, I did not turn my apples into mush. I cubed them.
