My native East Africa is known for its incredibly soft, triangle-shaped donuts known as mandazis. They go well with a cup of coffee or tea. They differ from normal donuts because they have a dash of cardamom, which gives them an authentic flavor. They go well with honey or jam. Curry can also be used to serve mandazis, which is how we prefer them.

Ingredients
- 1 (21 ounce) can apple pie filling
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 cup margarine
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
- Spread pie filling in an 8×8-inch baking dish. Sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg.
- Cream together margarine and sugar. Cut in flour with a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle mixture over pie filling.
- Bake in the preheated oven until the topping is brown and crisp and the filling is hot and bubbly, about 20 minutes.

Did not like the crumb topping. Tasteless. Is 1/4 cup brown sugar in recipe a typo? Always disappointed when I try a new recipe and turns out it was just not worth the work.
I used 1/2 cup of brown sugar. The crumble on top reminded me of pie crust, and I thought it tasted really good.
Pretty tasty. I added a little extra brown sugar. A tip for the butter. I freeze it and used a cheese grater to help cut it into the flour mixture. I also turned the broiler on to brown the top.
The topping is doughy. Not crispy at all.
I used apple pie filling that was sweetened with sucralose and Truvia brown sugar to make this a lower calorie dessert. No one even noticed.
It was literally ok, nothing more. Topping never crisped, took it out after 35 minutes. Topping just tastes like flour mostly with a little sugar. I’m the only one in my household that will eat it, no complaint there. Not the best but not the worst.

I used the suggestions to use oats and reduce the flour. 1 cup seemed like a lot of butter bit I gave it a fo anyway. t was so greasy!! The butter was pooling at the edges. I’m not a pro baker but I bake offen enough and have made apple crisp before but couldnt find the recipe I’d used previously so I tried this. Threw it in the garbage.
Topping did not crisp up. Very soft and flavorless.

Well been staring at this can apple’s from holidays. Its Monday no school so I decided to see if I can do crumble with canned apple pie filling. Honestly I’m a homemade kinda girl. My son had won a raffle came home bag of goodies and this was in it. So, long story short looked it up ended up on my Allrecipe site so decided give it a whirl an all. All I can say is I love from scratch but for quick pain free easy clean up and quick Nummy it was worth the easy way out. Having with vanilla ice cream just made it even better. Not sure be any left for Daddy when he comes home from work. All I can say Round 2 30 minutes out of my day big smiles from my son made it taste even better. Great after lunch treat. I added half of cup of oats and only 1and half cups of flour
Next time I will add 1/2 cup oats for crunch.
It was so good I made it twice. Excellent recipe if you are looking for an oatmeal-free apple crisp. I used butter. And added more cinnamon and nutmeg than the recipe calls for, plus added a little to the dough. It made enough dough for 2 crisps (my dish is a 7 or 8 inch oval and is smaller than the recipe calls for). I used the whole can of apple pie filling, but wrapped and froze half of the dough. Then with another can of pie filling made the 2nd one the next week. Excellent with vanilla ice cream. Great recipe! Thanks! Note: consider removing the photos that show oatmeal covered crisps.
I found the crumb mixture was more like a crust. It was definitely not crumbly. The only change I made was adding a little more sugar on crust
The flour alone would make a gummy crisp! I made it half flour/oatmeal. Should have omitted the flour completely. Will not make again.
I received a bunch of homemade apple pie filling as a gift and had to use it up. I made this recipe only I incorporated Jen Marshall’s alterations and had to bake it nearly double the length of time in order for it to get bubbly and the topping to saturate. But then it turned out pretty good. I will make it again like this.
I’ve had some cans of apple filling for a while and was craving apple crisp. I didn’t have any oatmeal so I tried this recipe and made it *exactly* as written. I’m extremely disappointed and the only way I think it could be made better is to not bother wasting perfectly good apple filling on it at all.
