Deep Dish Granny Smith Apple Pie

I combined a few other recipes and added a few ingredients to make this. It’s delicious, according to my buddies, and it tastes fantastic on chipotle tostadas.

Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 45 mins
Total Time: 1 hr
Servings: 12
Yield: 1 deep-dish pie

Ingredients

  1. 7 Granny Smith apples
  2. ¾ cup white sugar
  3. 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  4. 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  5. 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  6. ¼ teaspoon salt
  7. 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  8. 2 (9 inch) frozen deep-dish pie crusts

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
  2. Peel, core, and halve apples. Cut into 1/2-inch slices, then slice into 1/2-inch cubes. Combine sugar, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt together in a large bowl; add apples and toss to coat evenly. Add flour and toss again to distribute.
  3. Pour apple mixture into 1 pie crust. Roll out 2nd pie crust, top pie, and pinch crust edges together.
  4. Place pie on baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 45 minutes.
  5. Adjust the number of apples as needed to completely fill the pie.

Too heavy handed on the nutmeg for us and missing the allspice and bit of ginger of traditional apple pie spice blend. But so many have different taste preferences that most recipes are more guidelines than actual rules. By just using a traditional blend of apple pie spices and brown sugar in place of white granulated made it perfect for us.

My family enjoyed this recipe, but next time I would use less nutmeg.

Hi I made this pie with my five-year-old granddaughter Evie for Father’s Day. It was her first pie. It turned out really cute and was delicious. Your Daddy and her PaPa really liked it.
