Ingredients
- 2 ⅓ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup shortening (such as Crisco®)
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 4 teaspoons maraschino cherry juice
- 4 drops red food coloring
- ¾ teaspoon almond extract
- ⅛ teaspoon cherry flavoring (such as Wilton®)
- ¾ cup drained, chopped maraschino cherries
- 48 milk chocolate kisses (such as HERSHEY’S), or more as needed
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
- Whisk flour and salt together in a small bowl.
- Combine shortening, powdered sugar, cherry juice, red food coloring, and cherry flavoring in a large bowl. Add flour mixture and mix well. Stir in maraschino cherries.
- Shape dough into 1-inch balls; arrange 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
- Bake in the preheated oven until edges are light golden brown, 8 to 10 minutes. Immediately top each cookie with a chocolate kiss, pressing firmly. Transfer cookies to wire racks to cool completely.
- The cookies get their rich cherry flavor from the Wilton(R) flavoring. Do not skip this ingredient. These cookies can stand on their own so they can also be made without the chocolate candies.

Reviews
These cookies were not quite what I was expecting. I felt they lacked the cherry flavor I was hoping for even though I doubled both the cherry flavor and cherry juice, which was necessary in order to be able to shape the crumbly dough into balls. My cookies never browned around the edges even though the bottom turned a golden brown.
It was ok. Nothing more Very crumbly to form a ball The peanut butter recipe with chocolate kisses is much better
Like another reviewer, I found the dough to be very dry. Added cherry juice and it worked out fine. Will use butter next time, don’t care for the Crisco taste. Made these for a Christmas treat plate for my children. Easy Christmas cookie to make!
17 minutes in my oven
Great flavor, but I did have to double the almond since I didn’t have the cherry flavoring. I also used butter instead of crisco but I’m sure it would be the same either way. I found the mix to be a bit dry since there are no eggs so I just added extra cherry juice to compensate. Love the chocolate-cherry combination. This is a repeat for sure!
I just made these and they are great! I am sure the recipie would work perfect as is, but I had to make a few changes due to what I had on hand. I used margarine and added a few extra drops food coloring for a brighter color. I also increased cherry flavoring to 1tsp. I live in a very rural area and the only cherry flavoring I could get was a store brand. I think I wouldn’t have needed the extra if I had a more concentrated brand. They have a great texture and taste amazing. I know a few chocolate covered cherry lovers who are going to go crazy for these!
Actually make it at least EVERY Christmas. My family and friends would not be pleased if I didn’t have a plate ready for them. Easy to make and delicious, a must have recipe!! You will make often
