Brownie Frosting

My mother is the source of this chocolate icing for brownies. This recipe can be used to homemade brownies or, for an extra special touch, spread over brownies from a box. It’s delicious and really rich.

Prep Time: 5 mins
Cook Time: 5 mins
Total Time: 10 mins
Servings: 12
Yield: 1 9×13-inch pan of brownies

Ingredients

  1. 1 ½ cups white sugar
  2. 6 tablespoons milk
  3. 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  4. 1 cup chocolate chips
  5. 1 dash vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Stir together sugar, milk, and butter in a saucepan over medium heat; bring to a boil. Cook at a rolling boil for 30 seconds, then immediately remove from the heat.
  2. Add chocolate chips and vanilla to the saucepan; stir until chips are completely melted. Pour immediately over warm brownies.

My sister and I did our first review of this frosting a few years ago. We looked at each other, rolled our eyes, and said we are in deep chocolate trouble…. yummy. I cannot go to a family dinner without making at least 2 batches of brownies with this frosting..

I use this frosting for chocolate cake, and my whole family loves it. So much easier to make than buttercream too.

Love this recipe! I think 1/2 a recipe is plenty for one box brownie mix

The best brownies ever! Moist and gooey-goodness. I added a chocolate frosting glaze to mine, but is amazing all by itself too. The birthday boy LOVED them. A huge hit! I will be making these again and recommend to all brownie lovers!!

Made it in the microwave…

I added a little too much vanilla and the icing wasn’t shiny at all when it firmed up. I am not sure if that is because of the vanilla or if that is normal but I usual like my icing to look creamy with a little shine. The light in my picture shows a little shine but it’s only the lighting. Tastes very good though!

This stuff is heaven! Follow the directions ! You won’t be disappointed… have made it many times. I put it on top of chocolate brownies that I had given a fine layer of raspberry jam. Served for Christmas. It was loved

This is the best frosting ever! I took it to my family thanksgiving on a chocolate cake and everyone gobbled it up even faster than the millions of pie options10/10 will make it again!

Great recipe.

If you follow the directions PERFECTLY, you end up with a beautiful, shiny, deliciously fudgy frosting, perfect for brownies! Make sure the sugar is melted completely in the mixture and that it really does come to a full “violent” boil for the full 30 seconds. Then the chocolate chips have plenty of heat to melt fully, and there is no graininess. Anyone who had issues with the recipe didn’t follow it perfectly. I used about 2/3 of 60% cacao chips, and 1/3 of semi-sweet chips, and everyone in the house agreed it was the perfect amount sweet. Great recipe!!!!!!!

I had to add a bit more milk, tastes amazing with zucchini cake/loaf. I love it!!

Phenomenal! I have made this several times and it has yet to come out any way other than perfect. I do cut the recipe in half if I’m making an 8×8 pan of brownies, and make the whole batch if I make a 13×9. So fudgy and decadent, and it sets up just right without fail.

Unbelievable…….I mean UNBELIEVABLE! Made for my friend who is addicted to chocolate so I made “ 20 servings “recipe. Which wasn’t necessary, regular serving would have been plenty. I made box brownies added walnuts & coconut (needed to use coconut extract for more flavor). Used semi-sweet & milk chocolate chips, called for 2.5 cups I used 2 cups of sugar but that could be cut more also. I used Silk soy milk, no problem! I cooked it longer, as brownies weren’t done. If you have a grit feeling, sugar didn’t melt. I cooked on lower temp kept stirring till I couldn’t feel sugar in pan. Anyway, it’s a chocolate lover’s dream, absolutely delish!! Thanks “Crunchm”, great recipe!!!

Super good! Pretty sweet so I add a lot of nuts and use about half the recipe on a single 8×8 pan of brownies. I refrigerated the other half and used it a few days later. To reuse all I did was drop the cold chunk of it right on top of a fresh out of the oven pan of brownies and walked away. When I came back, the heat of the brownies had melted it and it coated the entire pan beautifully. I figured I’d just come back and smooth it out once it softened but I literally didn’t have to do a thing. So nice! On my second make of the frosting I used half brown sugar and it was very good still. Thank you for this recipe!

Frosting turned out perfect… Yum

Made the recipe as stated, vegan with soymilk and non dairy chocolate chips. It came out perfectly and set up very quickly. 10 out of 10

Really delicious, and works in place of a ganache too!

My family gave this 5 stars for flavor. I gave it 4 stars for texture. My try resulted in a frosting that separated from the brownies when I spread it and dried to a hard crust. I must have done something wrong. I would like to add that a sugar butter mixture burns easily so stir often. I used a medium heat also. However, I’m not giving up on this recipe. It is delicious!

I didn’t make any changes, I made it as printed and it was very good.

I use this on a number of things. Last week on a dark chocolate green chili cake. It was gone in under an hour. ??
