Apple Pie with Cheese, Please

White coffee from Lebanon is not coffee at all. It consists of hot water, rosewater, and a tiny bit of sugar crystals. For anyone who doesn’t enjoy coffee or who may have overindulged, this is a lovely post-meal beverage. On a hot day, try this over ice for a cool drink.

Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 1 hr
Additional Time: 5 mins
Total Time: 1 hr 20 mins
Servings: 12
Yield: 1 9-inch pie

Ingredients

  1. 1 (9 inch) frozen pie crust, thawed
  2. 6 slices Cheddar cheese
  3. 5 medium apples – peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  4. ½ cup butter
  5. 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  6. ½ cup white sugar
  7. ½ cup brown sugar
  8. ¼ cup water
  9. 1 (9 inch) prepared pie crust, at room temperature
  10. 1 egg white
  11. 1 teaspoon water

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
  2. Line the bottom of the pie crust with Cheddar cheese slices. Place apples into the crust in a circular fashion, layering slices on top of one another. Set aside.
  3. Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add flour and mix well to combine, removing any lumps. Add white sugar, brown sugar, and 1/4 cup water. Bring to a slight simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool, 5 to 10 minutes.
  4. Pour butter mixture over apples to cover all slices. Top with additional pie crust; seal edges. Pierce the top with a fork to allow steam to release. Mix egg white and 1 teaspoon water together in a small bowl; baste over pie crust using a basting brush.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  6. Continue to bake until golden and set, about 35 minutes more.
  7. You can use any variety or a mixture of different apples in this recipe.

I didn’t make changes to the recipe, and I can confirm the apple pie is great. Just forget the cheese. After refrigeration the cheese is hard and dry Even reheating didn’t improve it. The poured on treatment was excellent and the crust was outstanding. It will be my go-to for apple pie. BTW, I used gala apples.

I made this pie and love the creamy sauce inside. My husband loves the cheese aspect because he never has enough cheese in his diet… Lol. It’s delicious and the next day for breakfast with a cup of coffee too. Yum
