Ingredients

  1. 18 cups thinly sliced apples
  2. 3 tablespoons lemon juice
  3. 10 cups water
  4. 4 ½ cups white sugar
  5. 1 cup cornstarch
  6. 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  7. 1 teaspoon salt
  8. ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Place apples in a bowl. Toss apples with lemon juice in a large bowl and set aside.

  3. Pour water into a Dutch oven over medium heat. Combine sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg in a bowl; add to water, stir well, and bring to a boil. Boil for 2 minutes, constantly stirring.

  5. Add apples and return to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer until apples are tender, 6 to 8 minutes. Cool for 30 minutes.

  7. Ladle into 5 freezer containers, leaving 1/2 inch of headspace. Cool at room temperature no longer than 1 1/2 hours.

  9. Seal and freeze. Can be stored for up to 12 months.

I used 5 cups of water, as suggested by some. It was plenty. 10 cups would have been way too much. I hesitated at 1 cup corn starch, but it worked out well. Easy to do ( because I have an apple slicer lol). Looks delicious. Will use again.

I made this recipe several times and love it. However, I am very disappointed that All Recipes no longer offers the ability to automatically convert the size of servings. I want to pare the quantity down and find it tricky to work out the volume of water for a smaller portion and many reviewers seem to focus on too much liquid. I liked the older version of All Recipes better.

5 cups of water is plenty. I added a little more cinnamon and a pinch of cloves. I’ve made this recipe before and it always turns out great!

This is a wonderful recipe, one I’ve used successfully for a couple of years. I found a bag of the filling in my freezer from 12 months ago that needed using. I had one pre-made pie crust on hand, so I lined a med. sized casserole dish with the crust, dumped in the thawed filling, folded and brushed butter on the exposed crust, and sprinkled it with a mixture of cinnamon and sugar. Voila, my own version of an apple galette! Yummy!

no way this needs 10 cups of water. I used 5 and it was still too much. I’d use 2 next time. I also cut the sugar in half.

Way, way too much liquid. I reduced this recipe for 2 pies, used 1/2 cider and 1/2 water with the cornstarch, sugar and spices. I used 8 cups of sliced apples. It looks like that I will have filling for one pie. I may try this again, reducing the liquid, and increasing the amount of apples. I used Golden Delicious apples, which is my “go to” apple for baking. I am planning on using the leftover liquid to make an apple crisp.

This is really good. I did add more cinnamon and since we don’t care for traditional nutmeg I added some ginger. After reading other reviews about the liquid I did reduce it but used apple juice instead of water. Good frozen or canned.

This recipe was easy and turned out very well! Canning and freezing fruits and vegetables can be daunting for a beginner, which I am not. Just follow the recipe and go for it! I tweaked the spices a bit because my husband likes a very cinnamony taste in his apple pie. I also added a pinch of ground cloves. Thanks!

Loved the ease of making it. Mashed up some for fried pies with store bought dough and they turned out wonderful! Going to measure 3 cups and freeze for a pie and save the rest for pancake topping and more fried pies. I did scale the recipe down to use 9 cups of Granny Smith apples and cut apples into 2 inch chunks.

Easy as pie!!! This is my very first apple pie and I wanted to use a cooked filling. I was able to recruit my 10 year old daughter to help prepare and cook. This was delicious!

Great recipe and very easy. I agree with other reviews, however. It requires way too much liquid. This reduces the flavor of the spices. Next batch I’ll reduce water and add more apples.

Om’goodness… This is amazing! I did modify the recipe a bit,(picked our own apples & used extra spices) but it’s really good. It makes a lot. Definitely recommend
