This incredibly simple apple cobbler crumble is perfect for unexpected guests or last-minute cravings. This cobbler has a lovely moistness from the fruit juice that cooks out.

Ingredients

  1. 1 cup self-rising flour
  2. 1 cup white sugar
  3. ½ cup butter, softened
  4. ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  5. 4 Granny Smith apples, cored and sliced

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.
  2. Use a pastry blender or fork to blend together flour, sugar, butter, and cinnamon in a large bowl until crumbly. Reserve 3/4 cup flour mixture to use as topping.
  3. Sprinkle a light layer of flour mixture into the prepared baking dish; top with a layer of apples. Continue to alternate layers of flour mixture with apples, ending with apples. Sprinkle top apple layer with reserved 3/4 cup flour mixture.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven until apples are tender and topping is lightly browned, 30 to 35 minutes. Allow cobbler to cool for 10 minutes before serving.
  5. You can use fresh peaches instead of apples.
  6. If topping begins to brown before apples are tender, loosely cover the dish with aluminum foil.

Probably the worst apple cobbler I’ve ever tried to make. This was for a celebration of life for a family member and this hot mess ended up in the trash. Would never try this recipe. Wasted my time, money and home grown fruit.

This was simple and delicious. I baked the apples alone for 30 mins THEN put the crumble on top and baked for 15 more mins. That way is was lightly browned and not too dark. Also, apples were super tender. We are a low sugar family and Splenda in place of the sugar was terrific.

This recipe was easy and delicious. The top bakes golden and has some firmness/crunch to it which I like as most of the inside and bottom are naturally soft. It was nice to find a tasty cobbler recipe with ingredients that you are likely to have on hand. I made this using fresh peaches. I would recommend it to a friend!

Because of my time management skills, my butter mixture had time to cool before being spread over the apples. This resulted in less of a cobbler topping, not so much a crispy topping, but somewhere in the ooey gooey middle. I used 1/2 cup of brown sugar and 1/2 cup of white sugar instead of all white and i added ginger and cardamom, because it’s hot here right now and the cinnamon wasn’t doing it for me. I used 4 peeled and mostly evenly sliced Jazz apples because the Granny Smiths ones I had were bad. I followed the rest of the recipe and the measurements. The result was a lip smacking success. Thank you!

Although the taste of the apples was delicious, DON’T tamp the topping at all or it becomes impenetrable! This is unlike any cobbler I’ve ever had, and is nothing I will ever waste my time baking again.

I’m gluten intolerant so I made a couple of changes and it came out wonderful! I substituted the self rising flour for King Arthur’s Gluten Free Measure For Measure Flour and the Granny Smith apples for Honeycrisp apples because I had them on hand. I baked it at 350F for 55 mins. The topping wasn’t brown so I placed it under the broiler for 2 mins and that really did the trick. I served it with caramel sauce, in a jar, you can purchase from the grocery store. I will make it again!

Absolutely delicious. I did tweak the recipe a bit. I really wanted soft apples and browned crust. The only reason I gave 4 stars is because the top wasn’t browning. I used 2 cans apple pie filling. Added brown sugar, cinnamon and vanilla. Egg white wash brushed over the top helped to brown and thicken the crust.

This recipe is so delicious and so easy. The only thing I changed was the layering. I found that putting all the flour mixture on top instead of layering it created a better result. If you want fast, easy, and delicious, this is the recipe!

This was really good! I made it for Labor Day, and we ate it with vanilla ice cream. I forgot to take a picture of mine, but it did look close to the pic posted. I also doubled the recipe, and I think I may have been heavy handed when it came to the sugar, Lol!!! It was still a treat!

This turned out as well as I expected! I used self rising flower and half white and half brown sugar. I also prinkled the apples with cinamon/sugar and added some crushed graham crackers to the top layer! I also doubled the recipe! I will make this again!!!

Not having read closely, I made this with just all-purpose flour, however I decided to try and spice things up a little. I added (approximately for all) 1/4 cup of dark brown sugar, a pinch or so of salt, a dash or two of nutmeg, and doubled the cinnamon; personally, I like a nice, rich burst of flavor to offset the vanilla bean ice cream. Six Gaia apples, cut into 3/4″ pieces, left me with the perfect amount of dry ingredients! I baked for about 40 minutes, but felt that another 5 minutes or so would have been the sweet spot. In the future, I think I’ll try this with another 1/8th cup of butter to offset for the dark brown sugar I added. This recipe is great for a last-minute desert idea and will definitely be held in my mind for future events!

I made this today, and it’s my first time ever making a cobbler. We have a large family, so I doubled the recipe and cooked it in a 9×13 glass casserole dish. After reading a couple of reviews, I did decide to cook it at 400 degrees, covered with foil for 20 minutes, then uncovered for 20 minutes. I did end up leaving it a few minutes longer so it would brown a little more. It smells and tastes divine! We will definitely make this again!

This cobbler was ok. Easy to make. Simple taste. BUT peel the apples first before slicing them unless you really like apple skin. It does not tell you to peel them and I didn’t even give it a thought until I ate it and realized I did not enjoy that part.

I added 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract to the mix. I also added a crispy topping (like on a sweet potato casserole- brown sugar, melted butter, and flour). Finally I sprinkled some pecan chips on top. OMG. I’ve already had a spoonful but I can’t wait to drop a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream on top!
