I made this recipe more of a keto type. I used Pillsberry no sugar added yellow cake mix and followed the recipe. The candy I used was Russell Stover‘s no sugar added M&Ms and Lily no sugar added white chocolate chips and milk chocolate chips. Everyone in my family couldn’t believe it was sugar-free and it tasted really good. I recommend cutting your square and heating up in the microwave for a few seconds and eat it warm taste much better! Will definitely make this again in the keto version.
Too many mix-ins! I’d reduce to about 1/2 cup total for mix-ins. Also, way too moist in the center. Edges were more of a cookie bar, the rest were like cake and needed to be eaten with a fork. Not a bad recipe, just not a cookie by any means.
I used a gluten free cake mix since my daughter has celiac disease. I did think it was too much butter, but I believe that helped make it moist. I was a little uncertain about the cook time since mine were golden on the top but a little underbaked in the middle, even after 30 mins in the oven. Way too many mix-ins. I would reduce to 1/4 cup each. They tasted good. I wish Ree would bake more of her recipe’s gluten free or post alternative for celiac disease people.
I tried this twice. One with vanilla cake mix, with 1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips in batter and 1 cup chopped peanut butter cups on top,it was quite dry. The second time I used chocolate cake mix, with 1 cup dark chocolate chips in batter, and 1 cup chopped peanut butter cups on top. This time I increased milk to 1/3 cup and used 3 Tlb sour cream, The second time was more moist than first one I made, but still on dry side. More like cake than a bar. I gave it a three because of the dryness, but the taste was ok. A little whipped cream or ice cream is a great side.
Not too shabby! It did feel more like a slice of cake rather than a bar. But still was very tasty and looked great as a halloween dessert with red and black sprinkles and tiny tombstones!
A pretty easy treat to make but it is moist (I’m guessing all of that butter?) it was definitely too moist to call a cake bar. More like a piece of cake. I may decrease amount of mix ins next time. Definitely too sweet for me.
I baked this for our potluck lunch at work. Everyone liked it! I used French Vanilla cake mix which I think was the best choice. In my opinion, the 1/2 cups of candies are way too much. I would decrease to maybe 1/3 or 1/4 cups. Or if you want to do the 1/2 cups of candies use two of the three. I could not find the Unicorn Nestle vanilla morsels and used the Funfetti vanilla morsels. Next time I bake this, I am going to leave out the mini chocolate candies and use the rainbow sprinkle and vanilla chips.
Made it as the recipe is written. It was sooo dry. had to through it out. 3 tbsp of milk?
I combined it with one of my fav recipes. I use a Betty Crocker super moist butter pecan cake mix and instead of the candy, I used 2 Tbsp poppy seeds, 1/2 cup each butter brickle pieces, pecans and coconut. I mixed ALL the goodies into the batter instead of putting some on top. GOOD!
