Yowza! Fantastic Swedish meatballs, please! They are tasty and really simple to create with just a few basic ingredients. Friends and family wait all year to eat them because they are so delicious and have been in my family for years.

Prep Time: 20 mins

Total Time: 1 hr 20 mins

Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

  1. 1 pound ground beef
  2. ½ pound ground pork
  3. ½ cup chopped onion
  4. ¾ cup bread crumbs
  5. 1 egg
  6. ½ cup milk
  7. 1 tablespoon dried parsley
  8. 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  9. 2 teaspoons salt
  10. 1 teaspoon pepper
  11. ¼ cup vegetable oil
  12. ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  13. 1 teaspoon paprika
  14. 1 tablespoon salt
  15. 1 teaspoon pepper
  16. 2 cups boiling water
  17. ¾ cup sour cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, chopped onion, bread crumbs, egg, and milk. Season with parsley, Worcestershire sauce, 2 teaspoons salt, and 1 teaspoon pepper. Mix well with your hands. Shape into walnut-size balls, and place on baking dish.
  3. Bake for 30 minutes in preheated oven. Turn frequently so they brown evenly on all sides.
  4. To make the sauce: In a saucepan, combine oil, flour, paprika, 1 tablespoon salt, and 1 teaspoon pepper. Cook over medium heat until sizzling. Stir in hot water and sour cream until smooth and heated through.
  5. When meatballs have cooked 30 minutes, pour sauce over the top, and return to the oven for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. These meatballs are great alone, but are also delicious poured over egg noodles.

I followed recipe to the tee, but doubled. Way too salty! Will try again!

As written, the sauce made the whole dish unpalatable from excessive salt. My changes include making a panade of the breadcrumbs and milk before adding to the meat. After soaking the crumbs for 3-5 minutes, massage panade thoroughly into the meat before adding other meatball ingredients, cutting the salt 1 teaspoon. Use butter instead of oil for the sauce. Add 2 beef bouillon cubes dissolved in the boiling water. This provides both flavor enhancement and more than adequate salt for the entire sauce. These a lterations to the recipe would give the rating score 5-stars.

Made as per recipe. Very bland. Will not make again.

The meatballs were delicious, but the sauce was so salty that it was inedible. I added about 4 times the sour cream called for plus some half and half and it was palatable, barely. I wonder if there is a typo in the sauce recipe which calls for 1T. salt. If I make this again I’d use 1/2 to 1 t. salt and adjust if needed.

This is disgusting! There is no flavor. That is saying a lot because I have a very Scandinavian pallet. This tastes like straight up flour. I even added a can of cream of mushroom soup and I still cannot eat it.

To salty but it was good

Was very good. Nice full rich flavor, sauce nice and thick. Had over Angel Hair spaghetti. Like to taste the meat and sauce and a little pasta.

Yummy! I made these once already and making them again tonight. I only use ground beef, for personal prefrence (sorry), but they still came out delish! Served over rice, with fresh steamed carrots (buttered) as veg. I wish I had peas, but I make them almost everyday, so we were out, lol. This is a keeper recipe. As to the people complaining about the salt content…You know your family, and cooking style. Reduce the salt..I actually generally omit it, because most people reach for the salt shaker before even tasting. I didnt put salt in at all, but sprinkled a light shake on after tasting. It was perfect.

I’m sorry to say this but, the sauce wasn’t good in my opinion I added a can of cream of chicken soup and a can of mushroom soup a little red pepper and a cup of sour cream. Much tastier. The other way was very bland. The meatballs were pretty good though I will make them again but only for this

Very easy and yummy!

Way too much salt in both the meatballs and sauce. I cut the salt in half in meatballs and they tasted pretty good. I used only 1 1/2 teaspoon salt in sauce and it was still too salty. This would be a really good recipe with the salt adjusted.

both meatballs and sauce were pretty bland. i had to add worstecire and beef bouillon as a last minute flavor save because this literally tasted like nothing–creamy nothing, but tasteless nonetheless. ditto meatballs, which you can’t test while making because raw meat. add more salt and more worstecire to both to give them SOME flavor. both cooked up easily and according to recip.

It was delicious. We put egg noodles in it, it was good that way.

I did not make any substitutions on this recipe and I so wish I had on the amount of salt used in the sauce and the oil in the sauce. Should have used butter instead of oil and cut the salt in half. It was awful

I made this dish today for the local Senior’s Center. I made some changes as I made the dish with ground turkey. The only changes I made were to the sauce, I adding some garlic powder, dried parsley & a little allspice as well as using beef broth instead of only water. I served it over egg noodles & with peas. I can say that they were very happy with their meal. Thanks for sharing your recipe & I will be sure to make it again. Maybe with beef next time. 🙂

This was delicious with a few substitutions. The amount of salt called for would have made this inedible. I used 3/4 teaspoon for the meat and 1 teaspoon for the sauce.
Bruce Golden
The meatballs are simple delicious. I make my own sauce but yes it is not brown.
Ryan Brown
Yes it was fantastic over egg noodles. made enough for few days!!!!! DELISH!!!!+

After adding the amount of sour cream in the recipe, wow…needs to be cut way back. I added some beef base powder, garlic and onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, and liquid smoke. Had a much more flavorful sauce.
Kristina Williams
Liked the meatballs but I’m not so much into the sour cream so we used the sauce from Quick and Easy Hamburger Stroganoff and it turned out great.
