German-flavored burritos are available as a whole meal, snack, or brunch. It makes a different Brown Bag Lunch basis because it freezes easily. It ought to resemble a huge cigar. Adding sour cream to the burrito’s open end is optional. Eat with gusto—it pairs well with a garden salad, a Corona, and a squeeze of lime.

Ingredients
- 1 ½ pounds ground round
- ½ medium head cabbage, chopped
- 1 ½ onion, chopped
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 cup water
- 8 (10 inch) flour tortillas
- 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and stir in the ground beef. Cook and stir until the beef is crumbly, evenly browned, and no longer pink. Drain and discard any excess grease. Stir in the cabbage, onion, garlic, red pepper flakes, black pepper, and water. Cook and stir until the vegetables are tender, and the water has cooked away, about 10 minutes. Meanwhile, heat the tortillas one at a time in a large skillet over medium heat until pliable.
- Place a tortilla onto your work surface, then spoon some of the filling halfway between the bottom edge and the center of the tortilla. Flatten the filling into rectangle shape with the back of a spoon. Sprinkle 1/4 cup of Cheddar cheese over the filling. Fold the bottom of the tortilla snugly over the filling, then fold in the left and right edges. Roll the burrito up to the top edge, forming a tight cylinder. Repeat with the remaining ingredients.

I probably screwed it up by shredding the cabbage and onion in a food processor. I cooked it for 2x the length it was supposed to cook for but I still felt the texture was sloppy. I unfortunately did not like the taste and mooshy texture. Shredding vegetables releases WAY too much moisture; I should have just chopped it instead. Also, I added some fresh grated nutmeg which I thought was tasty. And I did like the taste BUT the shredded veggies were just sloshy.
I don’t give 5 stars often but this deserves it… even though I did change it a little… That being said… Who would have guessed that ground beef and cabbage would make such an awesomely good burrito!?! I changed the recipe slightly… because some people said that the meat can be a little bland, I simmered it in chicken broth instead of water, added a dash of salt and a few dashes of worcestershire sauce. I also added about 1/2 a cup of shredded carrots because I had a small amount that needed using. Quite spicy but if you like heat, these are perfect. How can attest to their deliciousness? My son who loathes veggies ate 2 of these burritos!!!
Very good and different. I left out the red pepper flakes (don’t eat anything w/hot spice) and used a bag of cole slaw cabbage since the store I stopped at didn’t have any heads of cabbage. It worked out perfect. I added garlic powder and onion powder as someone suggested since I left out the pepper flakes. Husband and I both liked it a lot but he gave it only 4 stars because he said it wasn’t as yummy as some of the other recipes I’ve been making lately. Will be making this again. I know our kids will like it too.
Don’t know if I missed something or what, but I added tons of extra spices and these still just didn’t do it for us. I really wanted to like these, but we won’t make them again. 🙁 Sorry.
Very easy to make and very tasty. Was a hit with my pre-teen girls.
I did not like these at all. It was really easy to make, but that was the only good thing about these burritos. I thought they were extremely bland. I cooked the onions with the ground beef and seasoned the meat with garlic powder, onion powder and red pepper flakes. It still came out really bland. All I could taste was cabbage…..
Really good overall. I added more black pepper and some Tony’s. Otherrwise, it would have been kinda bland. Also, sharp cheddar is the way to go with these. Good and really easy recipe!
These were really good….I added a can of tomato sauce because I thought they might be a little dry and they turned out tasting like cabbage rolls…Anyone who loves cabbage rolls should try that the next time they make these….Yum!
I used ground turkey and served with sour cream and salsa. It sounds strange but is so good! This also makes excellent leftovers.
I really enjoyed this recipe, though I have to say that I only tried it because the ingredients sounded like a strange combination. I tasted the filling and found it a little bland, so I added pepper and garlic powder (not sure how much, just to taste) until I liked the taste. They were so handy to have in the freezer for quick lunches. A definite make again.
Omitted cheese and added a beef bouillon cube.
Skipped the tortillas. Served it mixed with brown jasmine rice. Cooked cabbage, onion, and meat (added carrots) in some veggie broth and braggs liquid amino. I cut cheese in half added some sour cream sooo yummy.
Awesome! Totally a keeper!
These were very good, and very easy to make. They are fiilling as well. Thanks for sharing. Will make these part of my rotation recipes!
these are awesome omitted red pepper flakes, dont like ’em, the kids loved it
it may sound strange but it tastes delicious! will keep and reuse this recipe whenever i get a cabbage craving!
I accidentally left off the cheese and it was still great! The whole family enjoyed it!
Well I didn’t think this has much flavor. I won’t make this again.
These were SO GOOD! made almost exactly as written except used ground turkey, and added some extra seasonings. 🙂 Yummy!!
I thought this had very little taste other than the red pepper flakes.
Totally went out on a limb with this recipe, never heard of a Runza but liking spicy and reading great reviews, I decided to try it! Delicious! Boyfriend both liked it with a little sour cream! Thanks for a great NEW recipe!
