This taco spice tastes remarkably similar to that of a well-known fast-food taco joint. Making this at home will allow your family to prepare tacos whatever they desire.

Ingredients
- 1 ½ tablespoons corn flour
- 4 ½ teaspoons chili powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon seasoned salt
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ¼ teaspoon cumin
- ½ teaspoon garlic salt
- ¼ teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon dried minced onion
- ½ teaspoon beef bouillon granules
- ¼ teaspoon ground red pepper
- 1 ⅓ pounds lean ground chuck
- 1 cup water
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, combine the corn flour, chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, and seasoned salt. Stir in the paprika, cumin, garlic salt, and sugar. Blend in the onion, bouillon, and ground red pepper, stirring until all spices are well blended.
- Crumble the ground chuck into a large skillet over medium heat. Cook, stirring, until browned. Remove from heat, rinse meat with hot water, and drain water and grease from beef.
- Return meat to skillet, and pour in seasoning. Stir in water. Reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer until most of the liquid has cooked away, about 20 minutes.

It was fairly bland until I added Better Than Boullion. Then it was fantastic! I also added more water as it became dry toward the end of the cooking.
Get so much more enjoyment making it from scratch. Then pouring in a 1.29 taco seasoning packet. The homemade deep fried taco shells sealed the deal!
Doesn’t take anything like restaurant taco meat. More like store bought packet with less salt.
I loved making my own taco seasoning, especially having all the spices on hand!
Hands down the best taco seasoning mix I’ve tried from this site!!! I did add double the amount of red pepper flakes and an equal amount of cayenne. Some like it spicy!
Now I control how much salt is in my taco meat! The flavor is just like them except for the overabundance of salt. Thank goodness.
Haven’t bought a taco seasoning pack since I found this recipe…love it! Only change is I double the cumin and add fresh cut onion rather than minced onion.
Delicious, followed the recipe to the T, came out awesome.
Tasted exactly like hamburger helper. Which can be awesome, if you like that (and a lot of people do). Unfortunately, I’m not one of them. It definitely did not taste like a taco seasoning. To each there own though; much love.
I didn’t have garlic salt or chili flakes. Otherwise, the recipe was followed exactly. It needed help and is now a keeper. Omitting the garlic salt, I ended up tweaking this recipe to have 1/2 t more of salt & an additional 3/4 t garlic powder. I added another 1/2 t of seasoned salt, juice of 1/2 a lime & about 1/3 c minced bell pepper. With the changes I made, it will now replace the recipe I used to use to make tacos.
Turned out great. Followed recipe exactly.
I was craving tacos but didn’t have any pre-made packets. I found this recipe and it was amazing. I liked the recipe because it included how much meat goes with the recipe. Absolutely delicious.
Excellent! Meat was tender and flavorful. Much better than just frying it up with seasonings. Braising it with the water made all the difference.
Great recipe! I had everything on hand and made it exactly as written. It has a lot of flavor and I won’t be buying the envelopes of seasoning ever again. Thanks for sharing this
I like this recipe so much that I will never buy the prepackaged seasoning mix again. The only thing I changed was rinsing out the meat. I simply scooped up the excess fat. I know it’s not as healthy, but it probably gave it more flavor. I served this on Chef John’s homemade flour tortillas and both turned out so much better than any restaurant tacos. My husband couldn’t stop talking about them.
I substituted corn starch for the flour, otherwise followed recipe. Delish and I control the ingredients! Won’t go back to store bought again and SO easy!
Tasty, but too salty. I would definitely use less salt next time.
Amazing recipe! Easy and full of flavor! Used the left over to make chili the next day
I’ve made this a couple times. The first time I followed the recipe exactly and liked it quite a bit, the subsequent times I’ve changed the spice ratios slightly for my family’s taste. I prefer to add a full tsp of cumin and more red pepper but the recipe is really good all on its own! The corn masa flour I used was made blue corn as well, I don’t know if it really affects the taste much.
It turned out pretty good! I thought a little too much corn starch, and maybe needed more cayenne pepper. But we ate like pigs as it was.
Easy and tasty. Use 2 tablespoons per pound. I did need to add salt.
