Yield: 10 servings

Ingredients

  1. 1 (16 ounce) package farfalle (bow tie) pasta
  2. 1 tablespoon olive oil
  3. 1 pound bulk Italian sausage
  4. 2 cloves garlic, minced
  5. 2 ½ cups chicken broth
  6. ⅛ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  7. 1 bunch broccoli rabe, trimmed
  8. ¼ cup butter
  9. 1 ½ cups grated Parmesan cheese
  10. ¼ teaspoon salt
  11. ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the farfalle pasta, and cook until al dente, 8 to 10 minutes; drain.
  2. Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Stir in the Italian sausage until crumbly and no longer pink, about 5 minutes. Stir in the garlic, and continue cooking until the sausage begins to brown, about 5 minutes more. Pour off the excess grease, then pour in the chicken broth and red pepper flakes. Bring to a boil over high heat, then add the broccoli rabe, and cover. Cook until the broccoli rabe is tender, about 4 minutes.
  3. When the broccoli rabe is done, stir in the butter, Parmesan cheese, salt, and pepper until the meat sauce has thickened. Toss with the farfalle and serve.

Being Sicilian I was brought up with “pasta and vegetables”. My “American” friends never heard of broccoli rabe. Contrary to your recipe, I do not use butter and I prefer Pecorino cheese.

So yummy

This was a quick, easy, and YUMMY recipe! I used regular broccoli and a gourmet garlic chive pappardelle pasta (long thicker noodle) because that’s what I had on hand. I LOVE that the sauce isn’t creamy. For those who had trouble with their parmesan turning into a ball, wait until you incorporate your butter and cooked pasta, then sprinkle FRESH grated parm in as you incorporate with tongs. Super recipe that’s going into our weekly rotation. Don’t be afraid of the pepper flakes – they add a nice touch!

I made this, and I usually follow the directions exactly, the first time, but not having the correct pasta or broccoli rabe, I made some adjustments and it still turned out delicious. I used Penne pasta and regular broccoli. In reading the reviews, I used half cream and half chicken broth. Otherwise as is, fresh grated parmesan cheese and the butter. Will make this again.

this was fantastic!!! will make it again for sure it only got 4 stars because it was kinda soupy. next time I’ll use less chicken broth, for-go the butter and add a little heavy cream I added spinach at the end and it was great addition. over all, a great winter time recipe!

Ooh, this is so tasty!!! And it’s quick to make, too. I made a half-recipe (5 servings) to serve with a summer salad, but am sorry I didn’t make more – the leftovers would have been great for lunch during the week. My whole family is enthusiastic about this one – I’ll definitely be making it again, in future!

This the worst thing I’ve ever made. No sauce….just watery broth. It needs tomatoes and sprinkle cheese on top after to plate it. Italian sausage was too prominent.

Too much chicken broth. Basically a bow tie noodle soup. Parm turned into a sticky mess. Impossible to clean from pan. Sorry but this will be removed from my recipe box.

one of all time favorites, great flavor, easy to make and always gets a compliment.

Had regular broccoli and the whole family loved it! Thank you!

love it!!

Flavor was good but sauce was too thin, parmesan made one big lump. Making a cream sauce with the chicken broth, cornstarch with cold chicken broth, or adding cream cheese would fix it I think.

I really loved this dish! I did not have broccoli rab & used regular fresh florets instead. I also cut the cheese in half & it came out excellent w/a little more parm sprinkled on when served. Also, I made this with crumbled hot Italian sausage. While covid quarantined you have to make do with what you have on hand!

Notes to self: Used, Beyond spicy sausage, spinach in lieu of broccoli and added a tiny bit of onions w/ sausage

Full of flavor and so good but when I added the cheese it clumped up and became gooey. The sauce never thickened either. Not sure what I did wrong but I am going to try to add the cheese at the end and fold it in away from the heat. Maybe I just melted my cheese into clumps.

I loved this recipe! My husband and I both went back for more, we never do that. I used frozen peas we don’t like Broccoli Rabe, other wise nothing changed. Great for company or pot luck dinner.

Absolutely delicious

This was delicious, only change that I made was using defrosted frozen chopped broccoli. it was delicious w regular broccoli but cook the broc a couple of minutes less, not as firm as rabe. it w over cook and get mushy if cooked too long.

It’s a very simple recipe. I substituted hot Italian sausage and broccoli instead of broccoli rabe. I also added 1/4 tsp of cayenne pepper, 1/4 tsp Italian seasoning and a light dash of salt. I could have done without the salt and will cut back on the butter to 3 tbsp. The meal was simple, spicy and delicious.
Carla Alvarez
Easy to make delicious but next time I would cut down the red pepper flakes as am not a spicy person.. that is my only preference but as I stated I do not like spicy… it was easy and delicious…
