Italian Sausage Tortellini Bake

  4.7 – 151 reviews  • Italian

This rice complements Mexican cuisine and can be used as a filler in burritos. It is very comparable to the rice from a well-known burrito restaurant.

Total Time: 1 hr 25 mins

Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

  1. 1 pound bulk Italian sausage
  2. 1 onion, chopped
  3. 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  4. 1 (24 ounce) jar marinara sauce
  5. 1 (14 ounce) can Italian-style diced tomatoes
  6. 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  7. 1 (9 ounce) package frozen cheese-filled tortellini
  8. 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Heat a large pot over medium heat. Crumble sausage into the saucepan; add onion and green bell pepper. Cook and stir the sausage mixture until the sausage is completely browned, 7 to 10 minutes. Drain grease.
  2. Pour marinara sauce and diced tomatoes over the sausage mixture; season with garlic powder and stir. Bring the mixture to a simmer, reduce heat to medium-low, and cook at a simmer until the diced tomatoes break down into the sauce, 30 to 45 minutes.
  3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  4. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook the frozen tortellini at a boil until they float to the top and the filling is hot, 6 to 7 minutes; drain.
  5. Gently fold the cooked tortellini into the simmering sauce; cook together another 5 minutes. Pour tortellini and sauce into a 13×9-inch baking dish; top with mozzarella cheese.
  6. Bake in preheated oven until cheese is golden brown, 20 to 30 minutes.

My family loved it. I did use fresh garlic and regular diced tomatoes so I added Italian seasoning. Next time I will add a lot more tortellini…seemed like a lot of sauce and sausage for the amount called for, and I even used 12 ounces. Delicious, will be making it again

Used Italian Sausage Ravioli. I did saute the onion, green pepper and extra garlic which I added to jarred sauce. Going for a sausage, peppers and onion taste, but with some sort cuts. Topped with smoked mozzarella. Great flexable recipe which is easily personalized to taste.

a super recipe indeed!! The pop of cheesy flavor from the tortellini in combination with the flavorful sauce is a hit! I used a combination of sweet and spicy Italian sausages from the but her! I will make this again!! Thank you for the recipe!!

Love it! Quick and easy.

Made it. Delicious. Had to modify for what I had in the house And a smaller amount for two of us, but great.

This bake is very good. I skipped the green pepper and the garlic powder and used a big garlic clove instead. It was very good. I made half the recipe so I would say it might need a tid bit more than 4.5 oz of tortellini to balance the sauce/tortellini ratio.

We loved this recipe. I used sliced grilled sausage and added a little oregano and Italian seasonings. Highly recommend.

My family loved this recipe. I vodka sauce instead of marinara and the substitution was perfect!

Used tortellini – came out great

Very good and easy to put together. I used more tortellini because my package was bigger than stated – just eyeballed what looked like a good mix. Well liked by all!

Made as noted but used entire 19 oz bag frozen tortellini which seem the right ratio to me. Excellent dish.

I used prego 4 cheese and basil pasta sauce and a whole pound of frozen tortellini. Didn’t cook the tort ahead. Also added some dry sage, mustard, and garlic powder to sauce. Baked for 20 minutes and then added cheese for last 10 since I hate overcooked cheese. Would definitely make again.

So good and so simple, even the picky hubby liked it ! Leftovers went quickly ! I used rope sausage since that is what I had on hand, next time I might even add a little pepperoni to it – very good !

Loved it! I made it exactly as written, halving the ingredients to feed just two of us. My husband asked for it again two days after I’d made it.

Hearty and flavorful! Took a bit longer than I normally spend on prep, so I think if I repeated this I’d do like another reviewer and skip a lot of the boiling/simmering. I tried to follow the recipe as closely as possible, the only differences being: I didn’t drain the “grease” because for me it was mostly just the onion juice (your sausage may vary), I used a mozzarella/provolone blend (it’s what was on hand, still worked), and I left the dish in the oven for a little less than 20 minutes because my dish was biiiiiit too small to handle the final mixture and I feared spill-over. But I should have left it in for the full time; only a tiny bit of cheese spilled over and everything else seemed to be staying in place. I should have trusted the cheese. It knew what it was doing.

EXCELLENT! Easy to make. I added some cooked spinach, chopped up some garlic and some Italian seasoning. Everyone in the house loved this! Comfort food at its best. Thank You for a solid go-to recipe!

It turned out absolutely delicious the entire family liked it, including the picky eaters. I added a few extra seasonings to the meat peppers and onions mixture mainly Italian seasonings and cayenne pepper. Next time i think i may add some half and half or whipping cream only to make the sauce thicken a bit more and become a lil creamy under the cheese top.

It’s a KEEPER in our house. Sometimes I add a little more tortellini to the recipe because 9 ounces is not enough.

Great fun dish to make with your Family.

Made this once before and it was a big hit, now I’m catering this recipe for my brother’s get together. For sure. A great hit with anyone, only change I made this time is half is made with sausage the other half no meat because he has non meat eating guests, hence the aluminum foil barrier in the middle.

Amazing flavor! One of the few new dishes I’ve tried recently that the whole family went back for seconds on!! It’s a definite recommend ??
