Irish for “flag” is “brata,” while “pota” is a drug. This hearty vegetable soup is known as “flag soup” because the colors of the Irish flag are created when the veggies are chopped up. Italians refer to it as soffrito, while the French call it mirepoix. For those frigid winter days, it makes a beautiful soup either way. Serve with warm, crusty buns.

Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons soy sauce
- 3 tablespoons tomato sauce
- 1 tablespoon peanut oil
- 2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
- 1 pinch ground black pepper
- 1 pinch ground cumin
- 6 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves – cubed
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- ¼ cup minced onion
- 1 clove garlic, peeled and minced
- 1 cup water
- ½ cup chunky peanut butter
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons white sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- skewers
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix soy sauce, tomato sauce, peanut oil, garlic, black pepper, and cumin. Place chicken into the mixture, and stir to coat. Cover, and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes, but not overnight. This will make the meat too dark.
- Preheat the grill for high heat.
- Heat vegetable oil in a saucepan over medium heat, and saute onion and garlic until lightly browned. Mix in water, peanut butter, soy sauce, and sugar. Cook and stir until well blended. Remove from heat, mix in lemon juice, and set aside.
- Lightly oil the grill grate. Thread chicken onto skewers, and discard marinade. Grill skewers about 5 minutes per side, until chicken juices run clear. Serve with the peanut sauce.

We have been eating this type of satay for many years on our frequent trips to the Netherlands Never had anything made at home in Yorkshire that has turned out as authentic in taste – well done This will become a family favourite True rating 11/10
Really good chicken recipe! I used my indoor grill pan because it was raining outside. Chicken came out perfectly juicy and not dry at all. Loved the marinade. The peanut dipping sauce was good, but I made it even better by the addition of some Sriracha.
This good frfr
Excellent and easy. I used chicken and shrimp – it worked for both. I followed the recipe exactly except I used canola oil. I would say red pepper flakes for a little heat next time but I’ll make this again!
We lived in Indonesia for 4 years and man did this take us back! So easy and super yummy! My 10-year old (who was 5 when we left) gobbled them up!
Yummy, especially with the peanut sauce. Great recipe which we will do again
I don’t usually review recipes, but this one was absolutely delicious ! We will defiantly make it again and again .
A hit! The chicken was tender and flavorful. Loved the sauce. One kid didn’t like the sauce but loved the chicken alone. There is room to add a little more spice for some heat.
This was delicious, will definitely make again. I marinated my chicken for 45 minutes. For the peanut sauce I used kecap manis (Indonesian sweet soy sauce) instead of the soy sauce, 1 Tbsp of brown sugar in place of the white sugar and lime juice rather than lemon.
Loved this! I baked the chicken instead of grilling it because we didn’t have skewers. The chicken was pretty mild so it definitely needed the sauce- it was fantastic!
Amazing! This is my husbands go to recipe. It is a hit every time! He likes to chili pepper, to add a little heat to the sauce.
This was great! I love the sauce and how flavorful it was. I marinated the chicken longer because I really wanted the flavor through and through; this did not disappoint! I was a bit scared because the breast is not my favorite cut, but this was very nice. Thank you for sharing!
My family LOVED this! They told me I could make it any time.
Wow this is delicious! The only thing I did differently is added a bit more salt. Will keep this in my recipe box!
Í have made this one so many times and people love it every time. Since we don’t eat meat anymore I swapped the chicken for white fish. The fish must be a bit firm and it’s even better if it’s a bit fatty. With the fish I never bother with the sticks. I also use normal neutral oil instead of the peanut oil, since I always forget to buy it.
It saucy was very tasty but the chicken needs a little more flavour so that if someone is eating it alone it would have flavour.
Wow! I served this with a load of stir fried vegetables and wholewheat noodles. Such a tasty, health meal. Totally cured my cravings for a delivery and cheaper and tastier. Thank you, this recipe is a keeper! We let the peanut sauce down with fat free plain yogurt, which gave it a little more sharpness.
This is an easy to prepare delicious main dish. All five of my kids enjoy it.
I haven’t tried this yet but I’m thinking it sounds good. I will probably add a little heat in the form of some sambal mixed with the peanut butter. Yumm! Who’s hungry?
Really nice dish. The peanut sauce is superb! I marinated pork and it had a very nice flavor
For years I have been searching for a recipe to mimic the satay my childhood friend’s mother would make. She was originally from Indonesia and this recipe as written perfectly resembles that memory. Delicious on chicken, beef and shrimp.
