Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix

  4.7 – 373 reviews  • Mexican

This mild taco seasoning contains a lot less salt than store-bought versions. Make sure chili powder is salt-free to maintain a reduced sodium intake. The recipe also allows for the omission of salt. great with ground beef that is split 50/50 between buffalo and turkey breast. Buy spices in bulk, and you can prepare five or more batches for less than a dollar! Increasing the amount of black pepper and including extra ingredients will up the heat. Reduce heat by removing optional components and using mild or regular chili powder.

  7. Add to browning meat when meat is partially browned. After meat is completely browned, add 1/2 to 1 cup water and cook down to blend flavors.

Better than any premade seasoning. Definitely my go to seasoning now.

This is and has been my go-to recipe for taco seasoning mix for many years now! I have not purchased taco seasoning in a long time and do not intend to! This is the best. Yes, as others have said, you can control the seasoning. There is little salt, or if you need more add it! There is a little heat, less if you cut down the chile powder or use mild! This is just awesome and I will continue to use it!

Better than packaged plus I can control the ingredients to make sure they are good quality. I also added teaspoon of chili powder instead of cayenne! I recommend and make it your own!

Everyone from grandson to my husband enjoyed it. My reason was to control salt. Can’t go back to store bought! I used beef broth instead of water. Gives a more richer taste

I love this recipe! You can make your own mix and adjust according to your taste or dietary restrictions. I OMIT THE SALT. I use an inexpensive pepper mill from Aldi’s (cheap) and it’s a refillable pepper mill. If you cut the sodium, you need to spice up the rest. I also use Chipolte Chili Powder. Sometimes increasing the cumin really kicks it up a notch. By making your own seasonings, you omit corn starch and a slew of additives, as well as cutting your spice bill almost to nil. Homemade tastes better than processed. If you know of someone on a salt-free diet, this recipe doubled or tripled can be made in advance, and a great stocking stuffer. Have fun and enjoy.

I made this seasoning exactly as written and used it to season lean ground Turkey breast instead of ground beef. I then used the seasoned cooked ground turkey to make nacho’s (tortilla chips, black beans, grated cheddar cheese, sour cream, salsa, olives, avacado , jalapenos) The meat was absolutely delicious! Not too spicy for us at all. This is so much more healthy than store bought taco seasoning mix and a lot less expensive. I p.an on making a batch and keeping it on hand.

we tried this recipe today and were both quite pleased with it. My husband and I both are plagued with chronic heartburn/ reflux, so Mexican food (which I LOVE) is not a frequent meal we have. I love the low sodium aspect and that I can pronounce everything in it. I cook from scratch, never use convenience foods or processed items much, so I can really taste the chemicals in ready to use stuff. bleh. I also appreciate that it’s not laden with garlic, as that’s horrible when you have a bad gut. for those who haven’t noticed, next to the recipe titles, you will see a number (this one has a 4) you can click on that to change the recipe ingredient quantities. I set mine for 10, which gave me enough for 2 batches.

I enjoyed the spices together and found I triple the spices to save as a go to ready when needed! Delicious in my turkey taco meat!

I’ve been using this recipe for a while now. Several years actually. I like that making my own allows me to control the salt. I can also adjust other ingredients as I choose to tweak my seasoning. The other benefit is that there are NO additives for preservation or anti-caking agents.

I honestly followed this recipe to the “T” and I couldn’t eat it. Something about the amount of each ingredient is way off.
Claudia Brown
Wonderful! I prefer this to any pre-made seasoning mix.

I used chipotle chili powder instead of the regular that the recipe called for and added a tablespoon of cornstarch as a thickener and my family loved it. Better than the ones you buy in those expensive packets.

I omitted the red pepper flakes but added a good shake of cayenne and it was just the right amount of heat. Otherwise, I kept to the recipe and I liked this very much. I’m saving this recipe to use again in the future! PS: The recipe doesn’t specify, but this was the right amount of seasoning for one pound of ground beef.
Robert Harding
Very good

Meat taste like nothing

Ratios and ingredients were spot on. Adjust spiciness to your liking

Great! Convenient to have on hand to make smaller batches of taco or other “Mexican” filling, for 1 or 2. We like HOT and spicy, so I added 1/2 teaspoon of ghost pepper powder.
