Ham and Cheese Stromboli

My mother’s easy-to-follow, delectable coffee cake recipe. I modified the basic recipe by include blueberries.

Ingredients

  1. 2 (16 ounce) packages refrigerated pizza crust dough
  2. 1 (28 ounce) jar spaghetti sauce
  3. ¼ pound cooked ham, sliced
  4. ¼ pound Capacola sausage, sliced
  5. ¼ pound salami, sliced
  6. ¼ pound pepperoni sausage, sliced
  7. garlic powder to taste
  8. ¼ pound mozzarella cheese, shredded
  9. 1 onion, sliced
  10. 6 mushrooms, sliced
  11. 1 green bell pepper, sliced

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Let dough rise according to package instructions, then punch down, and divide into 4 pieces.
  2. On a floured surface, roll each piece of dough into a long oval shape. Spread each with sauce, then layer with ham, capacola, salami, and pepperoni. Sprinkle with garlic powder, then top with mozzarella, onion, mushrooms and bell pepper. Bring the long sides together over the center, and pinch together to seal. Turn over, so that the seam is on the bottom, and place on an ungreased baking sheet. With a sharp knife, cut 3 diagonal slices to allow the steam to escape.
  3. Bake in preheated oven for 20 to 30 minutes, or until golden brown.

I made this using Pillsbury Hot Roll mix instead of frozen bread dough. Super easy to make and took less than 5 minutes to prepare the dough. One change would be to not add tomato sauce to the stromboli, but serve it on the side to dip into when eating. When we order this out there is never sauce inside, and now I know why…it makes the dough on the bottom of the stromboli soggy. Next time I will leave it out. I made my own sauce using a can of tomato sauce, seasoned with oregano, basil, onion powder and garlic salt, a dash of salt & ground pepper, delicious! Stuffed ours with green peppers, mushrooms, salami, ham, onions, black olives, pepperoni and asiago cheese. Be sure to fill the center of the dough all the way to the ends then fold over, otherwise you will end up with super doughy ends. I seasoned the top of the stromboli with a little oregano, basil and parmesan cheese and baked it 25 minutes in a 425 degree oven. Delicious!

Got inspired. Made mini strombolis, some with sauce, pepperoni, salami, and mozzarella, and some with sauce, pepperoni, salami, steak, peppers, onions, mozzarella, and jalapeños. Best I’ve ever had!!!

This is a great appetizer or dinner when paired with a salad. I make my own dough (use a pizza crust recipe) but even then it is incredibly easy and fast to make.

My husband (who doesn’t generally cook) wanted to make Stromboli. I didn’t want him to use refrigerated dough, so I made homemade pizza dough (to reduce the salt content). He omitted the ham but otherwise kept the ingredients the same. Recipe was good. I would’ve like to use homemade sauce just to reduce the salt a bit more but I didn’t have any made. Thanks for quenching my husband’s craving!

This was pretty good. I used pilsbury crust in a tube (no rising needed), and pepperoni & salami were the only meats I had on hand. Veggies used were red onion, banana peppers & black olives. Baked for 20 min at 400. It would probably be better with better dough, and with some ham or another less greasy meat to balance out the grease. Great base recipe though.

I only needed one can of dough. I made this twice and both times the bottom burnt. Not sure what I am doing wrong here. Per the pizza dough directions, the pan needs to be greased, if not it will stick to it. Either way it burns regardless.

The sauce should be served on the side; the sauce should be a marinara sauce, not a jar of spaghetti sauce. If you do use spaghetti sauce you should look at the sodium levels because spaghetti sauce can be salty. Most pizza sauce has less salt than spaghetti sauce.
